You Have No Right To Destroy Property In The Name Of Protests – A Plus Slams Democracy Hub Protestors

Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has spoken out against the actions of protestors involved in the #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, criticizing the turn towards violence during what was intended to be a peaceful protest. The protest, which began on Saturday, September 21, 2024, aimed to address pressing national issues such as illegal mining (galamsey), socio-economic injustice, unemployment, poverty, and corruption.

However, tensions escalated as demonstrators clashed with the Ghana Police Service, who attempted to maintain order. Some protestors resorted to vandalizing billboards and political party paraphernalia around the 37 Military Hospital intersection, leading to a surge in violence on the second day of the demonstration.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz, A Plus condemned the violent behavior, emphasizing that such actions go against the principles of democratic protest. He expressed frustration at the destruction of property, stating, “I do not support nonsense. Ghanaians should avoid participating in this protest. Let those who wish to take part do so, but I urge the rest of us not to get involved.”

He continued, “You cannot stage a protest and end up destroying other people’s property. Burning billboards and similar actions is a step too far. Are you mad? Is this the democracy you talk about?”

A Plus also highlighted the critical timing of the protests, noting that with only two months left before the upcoming elections, such violence could jeopardize the democratic process. He warned, “There are only two months left for us to hold an election where John Mahama could become president. What will you do if the country becomes chaotic because of your violence during the protest? How will we hold an election?”

In addition to criticizing the protestors, A Plus urged the police to take decisive action against those engaging in violent acts, expressing support for the arrests made during the protests. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in the lead-up to the elections, cautioning against any actions that could destabilize the country.
