New Season, Same Hearts Of Oak As Giants Fall To Newly-Promoted Side

Accra Hearts of Oak began their 2024-25 Ghana Premier League season on a disappointing note, falling 1-0 to newly promoted Basake Holy Stars. A first-half goal from Prince Tweneboah secured all three points for Holy Stars, marking a dream debut in the top flight for the newcomers and extending Hearts of Oak’s poor run of form from last season.

Under the guidance of Coach Aboubakar Ouattara, Hearts of Oak introduced several new faces, including goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who made his competitive debut for the Phobians, alongside recruits Asamoah Boateng and Mawuli Wayo. Despite these changes, the team struggled to find its rhythm, falling behind early in the match.

Tweneboah’s decisive moment came when he headed home from close range in the first half, giving Holy Stars a crucial lead. The Phobians had a chance to respond, but their efforts were thwarted by Holy Stars’ solid defense and some fine goalkeeping from Abdul Wahab Abubakari.

Hearts’ goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was called into action midway through the first half, denying Holy Stars forward Francis Asante a second goal after a weak shot. On the other end, Hamza Issah, Hearts of Oak’s most threatening player, came close to leveling the score, but Abubakari pulled off an impressive save to maintain Holy Stars’ lead.

The second half saw Hearts of Oak pushing for an equalizer, with substitute Isaac Frimpong coming close around the hour mark. However, Abubakari once again stood tall, denying the Phobians a chance to get back into the game. Despite multiple opportunities, Hearts could not break down the resolute defense of Basake Holy Stars.

As the match wore on, the Phobians’ efforts to salvage a point went unrewarded, and Basake Holy Stars held on for a historic victory in their debut Premier League match, leaving Hearts of Oak with much to ponder as they look to recover from a rocky start to the season.
