In a recent turn of events, prominent members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have visited the Jakpa Palace in Damongo to seek intervention from the King of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii Kunuto Jewu Soale I, on behalf of the Damongo Member of Parliament, Samuel Abu Jinapor. This follows a directive from the Yagbonwura instructing all chiefs in the Gonjaland paramountcies to deny Samuel Abu Jinapor access to their palaces.
Yagbonwura Bii Kunuto Jewu Soale I’s directive stated that any chief who defies this order would face sanctions from the Yagbonwura palace. The directive emphasized the importance of respecting the authority of the Yagbonwura and adhering to the traditions of the Gonja Kingdom. The King accused Jinapor of interfering in chieftaincy matters in Damongo, thereby undermining his authority.
“Paramouncies in Gonjaland should not grant audience to any Government delegation, political party, or any person who pays you a visit, once it includes Samuel Abu Jinapor until he learns his tradition as a royal and learns how to respect the authority of the Yagbonwura. This statement is final and binding on all paramouncies within the Gonja Kingdom,” the King declared.
In response, the NPP delegation, including Savannah Regional Minister Saeed Muhazu Jibril, Savannah Regional NPP Chairman Iddrisu Sulemana, Chieftaincy and Culture Affairs Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, and other party members, held a closed-door meeting with the Yagbonwura to resolve the issue. MyNewsGh.com confirmed the meeting, but both parties remained tight-lipped about its outcome.
Despite the controversy, Samuel Abu Jinapor has publicly stated that he holds deep respect for the Yagbonwura, whom he regards as a father figure. “There’s no day I would disrespect him or his authority in Gonjaland,” Jinapor affirmed.
The situation continues to develop, and it remains to be seen whether the intervention by the NPP delegation will resolve the tensions between Samuel Abu Jinapor and the Yagbonwura.
