Spare The Military Your ‘Political Stupidity’ – Atik Mohammed Slams Sammy Gyamfi

People’s National Convention (PNC) Stalwart, Atik Mohammed has admonished the Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi over comments made about the military.

Sammy Gyamfi had threatened to deal with persons in the military and other security services who have allowed themselves to be used by the President Akufo Addo led government to intimidate some citizens from partaking in the ongoing voters’ registration exercise.

In reaction, Atik Mohammed expressed discontent about the utterances and questioned why leaders of the NDC have failed to criticise Sammy Gyamfi’s statement.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo he said, “It was the most irresponsible, infact it was a ‘treasonable’ comment to make . . . We don’t have to send our stupidity to the security forces. We don’t have to practice our political stupidity. To the extent that you have the audacity to threaten security agencies and tell them you’ll deal with them when you come, Ghana looks miserable! And for me, to the extent that nobody from the party came to disavow that comment or express dissent to the comment, it tells me he was speaking the mindset of the political party from which he comes and it’s a dangerous comment to have been made.”

He cautioned, ” . . when you begin attacking State institutions, what happens is that there is a tendency for a democratic relapse or what they call democratic decay . . . because you rendered those institutions weak. You rendered them useless and it emboldens whoever is attacking those institutions to move to the next.”

Atik Mohammed continued, ”he’s (Sammy Gyamfi) trying to say that [meaning] in the Military, there are NDC soldiers and NPP soldiers; and nobody in the NDC felt this was an unfortunate and reckless comment that deserves some condemnation”.

“We can do our politics and still be civil about it. We can have our disagreements and still remain civil about that.”
