Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is facing allegations from within his party over the misuse of funds allocated to the communications office. The accusations come after a video surfaced showing Gyamfi and his wife on a lavish trip to Miami, Florida.
The couple is seen enjoying expensive wines and meals, raising concerns among some NDC members about the source of the funds. They stayed at the renowned Betsy Hotel, South Beach, a 5-star establishment offering luxurious amenities, including a fitness center, a rooftop pool, and a beachfront location.
The Betsy Hotel is known for its high-end services, including housekeeping, room service, and a range of activities such as yoga classes and walking tours. Sammy Gyamfi and his wife’s stay at the hotel, reportedly costing US$3,000 per day for two weeks, has sparked outrage among party supporters.
A social media activist within the NDC expressed frustration, calling the trip an “extreme form of extravagance” and demanding an explanation from Gyamfi about the source of the funds. This incident follows previous questions about Gyamfi’s wealth, including a $2 million mansion he reportedly built in the upscale Airport Hills area. National Youth Organizer George Opare-Addo and MP for Asawasi, Muntaka Mubarak Mohamed, have both questioned Gyamfi’s financial sources, pointing to his lack of a substantial employment history outside the party.
The growing discontent among NDC footsoldiers highlights broader concerns about transparency and accountability within the party. Activists argue that funds meant for party activities, including defending party policies and leadership on media platforms, are being misappropriated for personal use by Gyamfi.
