Kumasi - 7th May, 2024
Addressing a gathering of chiefs and loyalists at the St. Cyprians Anglican Church in Kumasi on the occasion of his 74th birthday thanksgiving service, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the revered king of the Asante people, reflected on his humble beginnings and expressed gratitude for the guidance and support he received throughout his life journey.
In a poignant narrative, the Asantehene shared insights into his early life, revealing how his royal identity was kept from him to ensure he remained grounded and focused. Recounting his mother’s experiences, he disclosed that she nearly divorced his father, Barima Boakye Dankwa, due to his chronic infidelity. However, the intervention of his uncle, the then Asantehene Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, delayed the divorce until the birth of Otumfuo Osei Tutu on May 6th, 1950.
The Asantehene recounted being sent at the tender age of four to live with his uncle, the Hiahene at the time, Oheneba Mensah Bonsu, who nurtured and cared for him as his own son until he completed his basic education. Despite aspirations to attend the prestigious Prempeh College, his uncle, the Asantehene, redirected him to Sefwi Wiawso to study under the guidance of the Sefwi Wiawso chief, all in preparation for his future role as the leader of the Asante Nation.
Expressing gratitude for the pivotal moments in his life, the Asantehene acknowledged the generosity of Sir Sam Jonah, former CEO of Anglogold Ashanti, and Alhaji Yussif, who provided financial support during challenging times, including the eve of his brother Otumfuo Opoku Ware II’s funeral. He recounted how Sir Sam Jonah facilitated his travel from Accra to Obuasi in a helicopter, followed by a journey by road to Kumasi, demonstrating unwavering support during moments of need.
In a significant moment of recognition, the Asantehene also acknowledged his primary school teacher, who had taught him in class two, among the gathered audience. This gesture symbolized his deep appreciation for the individuals who played pivotal roles in shaping his journey from humble beginnings to royalty.
In a touching tribute, the revered monarch hailed Lady Julia Osei Tutu as an indispensable pillar of strength throughout his life journey. Describing her as a woman of remarkable integrity and selflessness, he lauded her for her unwavering support and her steadfast commitment to the values that matter most to him. Her steadfastness, devoid of greed, exemplifies her deep understanding of their shared vision and her unwavering dedication to their familial and royal responsibilities.
Furthermore, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II extended his gratitude to the esteemed chiefs of Asanteman, particularly those whose leadership predates his ascension to the Golden Stool. Among them, he singled out the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, whose wisdom and guidance have been instrumental in navigating the complexities of traditional governance. Additionally, he honored the Juabenhene, Daasebre Otuo Serebuo II, and the Manso Nkwantahene, Nana Bi Kusi Appiah, for their unwavering dedication to the welfare and prosperity of the Asante Kingdom.
The Asantehene’s narrative serves as a testament to resilience, guidance, and the importance of mentorship in navigating life’s challenges. His humble reflections underscore the significance of remaining grounded amidst the trappings of royalty, while his expressions of gratitude highlight the profound impact of support networks in shaping destinies.
As the revered monarch celebrates his 74th birthday, his reflections serve as a reminder of the enduring values of humility, gratitude, and the transformative power of mentorship, resonating far beyond the borders of the Asante Kingdom.
