Tatale-Sanguli Constituency, Northern Region – Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has set the record straight amidst allegations and false information circulated by his opponents in the run-up to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for November 4, 2023. Dr. Bawumia called on delegates to remain focused and disregard the unfounded claims, urging them to be part of history in the making.

Addressing the concerns, Dr. Bawumia expressed, “We are about to make history in our party and history in this country, but unfortunately the way the results of the super delegates came, many of our opponents are confused and they are seeing looming defeat on November 4.”

Dr. Bawumia pointed out that his opponents have resorted to spreading lies to sow disunity and discord within the party’s ranks. He highlighted some of the false allegations, including claims that he provided financial incentives to constituency chairmen and proposed unopposed candidacies for sitting MPs.

“I hear different lies every day, and that I’m giving 275 constituency chairmen GH¢100,000 and a pick-up, this is just a ridiculous lie,” he emphasized. Regarding the alleged proposal for unopposed candidacies, Dr. Bawumia stated, “How can I say that? The party constitution cannot even allow that because the party will be stronger when we have democracy working, so I will never say any sitting MP should go unopposed, so that lie should be left alone.”

Additionally, Dr. Bawumia debunked claims that he would prevent electoral area coordinators and polling station executives from voting in the presidential elections, affirming his commitment to party democracy. He clarified, “They said further that I will not allow electoral area coordinators and polling station executives to vote in the presidential elections. How can this happen? It’s not possible for me to stop electoral area coordinators and polling station executives from voting because this was a national conference decision, and I was very supportive of expanding the Electoral College to allow them to vote, and by the Grace of God they will continue to vote. What I want to do is to push for a new reform to allow polling station executives and electoral area coordinators to vote in the election of regional executives.”

Dr. Bawumia made these statements during his nationwide engagement with party executives, with this particular event taking place in the Tatale-Sanguli Constituency in the Northern Region.

On November 4, 2023, approximately 200,000 delegates of the New Patriotic Party will exercise their voting rights to select the party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 general elections. The race for the nomination continues, with Dr. Bawumia addressing concerns and focusing on the path forward, emphasizing party unity and the democratic process.
