Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad: How Twitter Exposed Lydia Forson’s ‘Double Standards’ In Shatta Wale-Burna Boy Brouhaha

For those who are familiar with George Orwell’s 1945 Novel Animal Farm, you may have come across the phrase, “four legs good, two legs bad”.

The six-word sentence ‘four legs good, two legs bad’ is one of the two widely known lines from George Orwell’s masterpiece – the other being ‘all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others’.

In many ways, these two quotations neatly encapsulate the central plot: what begins as a noble (or noble-sounding) ideal and plea for equality descends into self-contradictory and deliberately deceptive language.

Focus on the last two paragraphs for a minute and juxtapose this to the recent events that has left Ghana movie star, Lydia Forson trending on Twitter for days and you will realize how succint it is that this writer picked the famous phrase above.

Now for those who may be unaware of why Lydia Forson is trending on Twitter and what necessitated this writing in the first place, the actress has been cited by twitter users as a “hypocrite” after a post she made in the wake of Shatta Wale’s social media banter with Burna Boy.

During the banter between Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale and his Nigerian counterpart, Burna Boy, the two accused each other of rape, including making other posts that appeared to suggest a general disrespect for women.

The two also made posts that appeared to make jokes out of issues bordering on rape, leaving many feminists and gender advocates disappointed and appalled.

Lydia Forson subsequently made a post on Twitter claiming that she had spoken to Shatta Wale and that even though she couldn’t convince Shatta Wale to accept her position and admit he was wrong, she hoped that he will eventually realize his wrongdoing.

However, a careful analysis of Lydia’s past tweets on the subject of rape, appears to show that the movie star is shifting the goal posts because the person involved is her friend.

Many twitter users who commented on Lydia’s post wondered if she would have reacted in the same way if the person involved was not Shatta Wale but a different person.

The fact remains that Lydia Forson has been one of the most consistent, vociferous and staunch advocates in the fight against rape, and the eradication of Ghana’s pervasive rape culture, however, even for a person like her, she needs to be more firm in calling out rape apologists even when she wines and dines with them.
