Yesterday, many parts of Accra were affected by what was described as a minor earthquake.
The Ghana Geological Survey Authority however have warned Ghanaians that the minor earthquake was an indication of an impending major one.
Information reaching us confirmed that, the source of the earthquake were from the coast of the Dansoman beach and estimated to be between 200 and 500 meters into the sea.
It also consisted of what experts call the foreshock which was at a magnitude of 3.7 on the Richter scale which occurred at 10:48pm, then the main shock with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale which occurred at 10:4pm. Then, the aftershock which measured a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter scale which also occurred at 10:57pm.
A senior Seismologist at the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, Mr. Opoku explained that, Accra, was an earthquake –prone zone with fault lines. He indicated that, anytime minor earthquakes happened, it was a sign of an imminent major quake but was quick to add that, there was no way of telling when this major earthquake would happen because of the science that govern quakes.
Mr. Opoku further explained that, since yesterday’s quake measured 4.2 on the Richter scale, it was strong enough for an indication that there would be a major one.
“When it comes to earth tremors we have a return period when the tremor re-occurs. It is, however, not possible to tell when,” the senior seismologist said as he urged all to prepare for the impending one.
In 1939, Accra experienced an earthquake which killed more than 10 people and injured many others and properties such as buildings. That was the biggest earthquake to have ever hit the country.
