796 Prisoners Granted Amnesty By President Akufo-Addo

In relation to the 1992 constitution in accordance with Article 72(1), it states that the President shall have the power to reprieve, grant pardons, respites or remissions of punishment tor to suspend, remit or commute the sentence of any person convicted of an offense.

Per the aforementioned, President Akufo-Addo has therefore granted amnesty to 794 prisoners in a way to decongest the prisons as part of measures to control the corona virus infections in the prisons as the safety in the conditions of the prisons were questionable.

772 convicts were first offenders, 2 of them sentenced to death had their sentences reversed to life imprisonment, 16 were very old prisoners and 4 critically ill prisoners.
