Six parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections have filed an application for a judicial review, requesting the High Court to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to collate and declare results in their constituencies.
The candidates, represented by lawyer Gary Nimako Marfo, include Charles Forson (Tema Central), Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Patrick Yaw Boamah (Okaikwei Central), Martin Kweku Adjei-Mensah Korsah (Techiman South), Nana Akua Owusu Afriye (Ablekuma North), and Eric Nana Agyemang Prempeh (Ahafo Ano North).
The application seeks two key orders. The first is for a Mandamus to compel the EC to collate and declare results from the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections in their respective constituencies. The second requests the Inspector General of Police to ensure adequate security at collation centers to enable the EC to fulfill its constitutional mandate without further hindrance.
The move follows reported disruptions and alleged irregularities during the collation process in the affected constituencies. These issues, the candidates argue, have delayed the declaration of official results, potentially undermining the democratic process.
Speaking to the press, lawyer Gary Nimako emphasized the importance of safeguarding electoral integrity. “Our clients are simply seeking to ensure that the will of the people is respected. The EC has a constitutional duty to declare results in a timely and transparent manner,” he said.
The EC is yet to issue a public response to the application. Meanwhile, political analysts suggest that the case could heighten tensions in the aftermath of a tightly contested election.
The High Court is expected to hear the application in the coming days.
