4 Reasons Why Napo Could Be The NPP’s Masterstroke To Break The Eight
In a move that ends months of speculation, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, has been formally announced as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The confirmation was made by the National Council of the party on Thursday, July 4, 2024, in Accra. This announcement brings significant implications for the NPP’s strategy in the upcoming elections, with many political analysts suggesting that NAPO’s selection could be pivotal in securing victory. Here are four reasons why NAPO could be the NPP’s masterstroke to break the eight-year electoral cycle.
1. Securing the Ashanti Region
The Ashanti Region, often referred to as the “World Bank” of the NPP due to its significant voter base, is crucial for the party’s success. Historically, the NPP has enjoyed overwhelming support in this region, but recent criticisms regarding inadequate developmental projects have cast doubt on the margin of victory. NAPO, a respected figure from Asante royalty and a beloved politician in the region, could help the NPP regain and possibly even expand their support base. Election analysts predict that with NAPO on the ticket, the NPP could increase their vote share in the Ashanti Region from 77% in the 2020 elections to an impressive 85-90%, a margin that could be decisive for overall victory.
2. Uniting the Party
The selection of NAPO is also seen as a strategic move to unite various factions within the NPP. Kennedy Agyapong, a significant figure within the party, had previously stated that he would only join the Bawumia campaign if NAPO was selected as the running mate. His subsequent appearance at a Bawumia campaign event in the Ashanti Region signaled NAPO’s imminent selection and showcased a potential consolidation of support. Additionally, reports indicate that any perceived standoff between NAPO and the Ashanti Regional chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi), has been resolved. This unity, particularly the active involvement of Kennedy Agyapong, is a positive development for the NPP, ensuring a more cohesive and robust campaign effort.
3. Experience in the Education Sector
Education remains a central issue in Ghanaian politics, and the selection of NAPO, a former Minister of Education, is strategically advantageous. His tenure saw the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) initiative, a flagship program of the NPP. This positions him to effectively counter the NDC’s running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who also served as Minister of Education. The presence of two former education ministers as running mates will likely bring the education debate to the forefront, with NAPO’s firsthand experience and achievements providing a solid foundation for the NPP’s campaign narrative.
4. Parliamentary Experience
Dr. Bawumia, though a seasoned economist and current Vice President, lacks parliamentary experience. NAPO, on the other hand, is a four-term Member of Parliament, bringing nearly sixteen years of legislative experience to the ticket. This depth of experience is invaluable, offering the Bawumia campaign the legislative insight and networks necessary to navigate the complexities of governance. NAPO’s extensive parliamentary background ensures that the NPP can effectively manage potential legislative challenges and foster necessary compromises, enhancing their ability to implement their agenda post-election.
