Your Very Own Asiedu Nketia Gave Akufo-Addo 51.2%, JM 47% Before SC – KON to Sammy Gyamfi

Published

on

Lead spokesperson for the second respondent in the ongoing petition, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has rubbished claims by the the petitioner and the NDC that President Akufo-Addo polled less than 50% in the 2020 polls.

In a post-trial address to the media on Monday, 22 February 2021, one of the spokespersons for Mr Mahama’s legal team, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, who is also the National Communication Officer of the NDC, said: “We are doing all these things because of the Constitution that all of us have agreed to be bound by”, explaining: “Article 63(3) of that Constitution says that no person should be made a president until and unless he attains more than 50 per cent of the total valid votes in any presidential election and it is clear from Jean Mensa’s own declaration and the figures contained therein that candidate Akufo-Addo did not get more than 50 per cent”.

Per the NDC’s computations, Mr Gyamfi said President Nana Akufo-Addo should not be in office.

However, Oppong Nkrumah in reaction indicated that the NDC’s own General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia whiles doing the maths in court gave President Akufo-Addo 51.2% and John Mahama 47%.

“Ghanaians have followed the journey that has gone on so far in the court where the petitioner was being looked to adduce evidence”, KON told the press on Tuesday February 22, 2021.

“I heard our colleagues [NDC legal team] saying that the mathematics is clear, but you have been here covering for all the days that we have been here and I’m not sure that to you, you saw mathematics that yielded results other than 47 per cent for the petitioner, Mr John Dramani Mahama and 51.2 per cent for the second respondent Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“That was the mathematics that you saw Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia arrive at.

“That was the arithmetic that he arrived at”, the Ofoase Ayirebi MP stressed, noting: “The answer that he arrived at when he made the various computations”.

“You are hearing them telling you that the mathematics is clear, nobody crossed the 49-per cent [mark] but in the walls of the Supreme Court, before the Justices, I’m not sure you have seen them prove that”, he added.

In his view, the court has given fair hearing to all the parties involved in the matter, of which, he noted, the petitioner has been a beneficiary.

“The court has decided that despite its earlier warnings that if its processes are not complied with, it can strike out the matter, it will still accommodate them so that they can file their written addresses. I think this is clear evidence that nobody is being denied a fair trial here. The court bent itself backwards and is accommodating the interest of all parties so we look forward to the 4th of March for judgment”.

I Was The Best Man At Dr. Ayine’s Wedding – EC Lawyer, Amenuvor Shows Support At Contempt Trial

Published

Lead Counsel for the 1st Respondent in the Election Petition hearing, Justin Amenuvor, has shown solidarity to colleague Lawyer Dominic Ayine who was cited for Contempt by the Supreme Court.

According to Justin Amenuvor, he has been friends with the spokesperson for the Petitioner for as long as possible and was even the best man at his wedding thus he was only there to show support.

His statement comes after a judge asked whether he [Amenuvor] came to support his roommate adding that his name was not part of the Lawyers involved in the case.

“Yes my Lord, I came to support my roommate, best man and my best friend. I am not appearing as Counsel but as a friend of Dominic Ayine and a best man at his wedding. He was Commonwealth Hall Secretary in our year, he’s a very good friend of mine. We go way back.”

Dr Ayine was found guilty for some comments he made while addressing the media on February 16, 2021. According to him, the apex court had a “pre-determined agenda” to rule against the Petitioner and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama.

Following the hearing on February 21, Dr Dominic Ayine was called to mount the witness box to explain the reason for his utterances. According to him, it wasn’t his intention to mar the reputation of the Supreme Court and quickly apologized to the Justices on the bench.

The Chief Justice, Kwesi Anin-Yeboah, conditioned that he would only be forgiven if he [Ayine] rendered an unqualified apology and retracts the ‘scandalous statement’ through the medium he defamed the apex court of Ghana on.

Following the retraction and apology, the Supreme Court discharged the case while advising the former Attorney General to be cautious with his utterances and not cause further him to his profession and the Supreme Court.

“We want to struck out having apologized and purge yourself from contempt”. The Chief Justice noted.

Meanwhile, the Election Petition hearing will continue on March 4 for judgement.

Election Petition Final Address: EC Admits It Made Errors In Final Declaration

Published

on

The lawyers of the Electoral Commission (EC), first respondent in the ongoing petition hearing say it is unfortunate that they were dragged to court by the NDC’s 2020 Presidential Candidate, John Mahama.

According to them, the harmless mistake made by EC boss, Jean Mensah while declaring the election results on December 9 had no bearing on the outcome of the election which has triggered the petition.

They further stated that the former President has failed to provide any evidence whatsoever to challenge the election results and for that matter, the declaration of the result and hence, they are calling on the court to dismiss the petitioner’s case.

The submission is contained in the written closing address filed by the lawyers in compliance with the Supreme Court’s orders.

If The People Of SALL Had Voted, They Would Have Voted For Me – Amewu

Published

on

Hohoe lawmaker, John Peter Amewu has asserted that his votes would have increased if eligible voters of Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) were permitted to vote in the 2020 Parliamentary elections.

“I sympathise with my brothers and sisters at SALL for not taking part in the parliamentary elections. I went into the elections as a player and not a referee. I did not constitute the rules that were in place for me to come and contest,” Amewu, the Railway Development Minister-nominee told the Appointments Committee on Wednesday, February 24, 2021.

“I just went in as a contestant and unfortunately, for one reason or another, they were not allowed to vote in Hohoe. I sympathise with them, and I would have been very happy if the people of SALL had voted because, in 2004 and 2008, those were my strongholds,” Amewu claimed, adding that “If they had voted, I would have even won with a higher margin.”
