You’ll Face The Consequences If Rawlings’ Chieftaincy Oath Is Not Withdrawn – Anlo Chiefs To Govt
Secretary of the Funeral Planning Committee of the Anlo Traditional Area, Agbotadua Kumassah has said the state will have itself to blame for the repercussions that will follow their failure to allow for the final funeral rites of former President, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings to be performed by Chiefs from his hometown.
According to them, much as Mr. Rawlings served in many capacities; as a military man, father, and a statesman, he also had traditional responsibilities as an enstooled chief.
Speaking to GhanaWeb in an exclusive interview, Togbi Kumassah explained that the former President, having been enstooled in 2016 as Nutifafa Fia (Peace Chief), underwent some rituals which included taking an oath as a Chief.
This oath, according to him, ought to be withdrawn, only after which someone else can take that oath and be enstooled in his stead, following his demise.
“…If funerals are not observed, it is very difficult to put another person on the stool because the installation rites of a chief involve swearing of an oath and that oath must be taken back when the person passes on and that would have been done for the late president so that someone can be enstooled in his stead.
“Now that that rite was not performed, it will be impossible to enstool another person to succeed him and if that oath is not retrieved, the repercussions will be on the state,” he noted.
According to Agbotadua Kumassah, the local funeral planning committee was expectant that as requested from the state, the mortal remains of Mr. Rawlings would have been brought back to his hometown after the state burial, for the final rites and burial by the chiefs but this was not realized.
Despite this he says, there has been a scheduled meeting between the extended family of Mr. Rawlings and the Anlo Traditional Council, to deliberate on the way forward, as far as holding a burial to complete the said rites are concerned.
“Until the afternoon of 27th, we were optimistic that the body will be released to us, it was until the body was buried that we realized that we will not have the body.
“There should be a ceremony where the oath sworn to him will be taken back by the state, that is why it is very important to discuss the way forward on Saturday, how they will retrieve that oath will be very central at that meeting.
“So the chiefs are meeting, at the Avadada’s palace, to consider the next line of action, I’m very sure it will be discussed at that meeting whether there should be a traditional funeral or we leave things as they are,” he concluded.
Background:
Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings passed away on November 12, 2021, after a short illness in Accra. Aside being a family man with 4 children whom he had with his childhood sweetheart, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, he also served as a statesman and served in the Ghana Air Force, where he rose to the rank of Flight Lieutenant.
In 2016, the Paramount Chief of Anlo Traditional Council Togbui Sri III enstooled Former President John Jerry Rawlings as Togbuiga Nutifafa (Senior Peace chief) of Anlo Traditional area for his leading role in maintaining peace and stability in Ghana.
The former President was enstooled at a mini Hogbetsotso festival durbar held in Tadzewu to herald the grand durbar of the chiefs and people in Anloga.

I Will Not Apologise To Bagbin Or Haruna, I Stand By My Statement – Sammy Gyamfi
National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi has said that he still stands by his earlier statement accusing the leadership of the minority caucus in Parliament of betraying the Party.
Sammy Gyamfi has come under intense Pressure following a write up he published on social media accusing speaker of parliament,Alban Bagbin, leader of the minority, Haruna Iddrisu and others of betraying the NDC for their selfish interest.
Though many NDC stalwarts including Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga and former MP for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak have asked Sammy Gyamfi to Apologise, he insists he still stands by his words.
According to the young politician, his comments were meant to put the leadership of the minority caucus on their toes and not out of any personal vendetta.
“So it is to ensure that the right changes will happen and the right things will be done so that the NDC will grow. It is not out of spite for anybody, it is not out of disrespect for anybody but we must learn. The founder of the party was a brave man so sometimes, somebody can be your friend but you need to look at the collective good and collective interest and do certain things,” he told Power FM.

Petition: You Can’t Say You Lost Because Jean Mensah Didn’t Testify – Ayikoi Otoo To Mahama
Former President John Dramani Mahama cannot blame his defeat in the election petition on Electoral Commission boss, Jean Mensah’s refusal to mount the witness box, a former Attorney General, Nii Ayikoi Otoo has said.
Speaking to Abena Tabi, host of the KEY POINTS on TV3 Saturday March 6, Mr Otoo noted that the duty lied on the petitioner to prove his case and not rely on the EC Chair.
“Nobody should say the cases was dismissed because the EC chair did nit mount the box,” he said adding that “You had a very bad.”
His comment comes after Mr Mahama chastised the EC boss after the final verdict claiming the court aided her from accounting to the people of Ghana by evading cross examination.
Ghanaians will also remember this 2021 Election Petition for that profound moment when the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission opted to evade public scrutiny,: Mahama said.
“Everything was done in this trial to prevent the Commission from accounting to the people in whose name they hold office.
“Requests for Interrogatories were dismissed. A request to inspect documents in the possession of he Commission was turned down. The request for admission of facts was ignored.
“Worse still, she was aided by her counsel and the court to avoid explaining to the good people of Ghana from her own testimony, under oath in a properly constituted court of law, the errors she herself admits to have committed in the declaration of the 2020 Presidential election results.
“This is a clear stab in the heart of transparency and accountability to the sovereign people of Ghana. Whatever the reasons for not allowing Mrs. Jean Mensa to testify or answer any questions, it leaves an embarrassing stain, not only on our justice delivery system but also, on the nation’s electoral system, which has deepened the grave doubts harboured by many Ghanaians about the true outcome of the December 2020 Presidential Election.
“The motto of Ghana’s Electoral Commission is Transparency, Fairness and Integrity – principles the key actors clearly failed to live up to on this occasion. The refusal to account to Ghanaians, further, sets the worrying precedent – and I do really worry about this dangerous precedent – that may allow other heads of state institutions to adopt an approach of opacity and non-accountability in their work.
“Just because they can rely on unconvincing interpretations of our laws to shield them from scrutiny in the near future. I hope and pray that time will prove me wrong. There is a famous legal maxim brought into common use by Lord Chief Justice Hewart in 1924, that ‘Justice must not only be done but should manifestly and undoubtedly seen to be done’.”
