Christian Atsu‘s uncle Abraham Twasam has explained why the late footballer’s wife is still not in Ghana.

With the passing of Christian Atsu, many people looked forward to Maria Claire Rupio’s arrival in Ghana to host visitors and fulfill the customary duties of a grieving wife.

Abraham Twasam clarified, however, that Maria Claire Rupio desired to be in Ghana but was advised to wait until the funeral’s date was set by the family.

Atsu’s uncle claimed in a recent interview that the family in Ghana stays in constant communication with Claire Rupio, who lives in the UK with their three kids.

“His wife calls us every day. She calls us every morning to ask us what is going on. She always says the children worry her, so she is always calling us to hear from us,” Abraham Twasam stated in an interview monitored by Pak MediaGh.

“We’ve told her to wait until the funeral so she comes. We will give the children local names so that people will know they are from Ghana,” he added.

After it was determined that a body found at a rescue location in Hatay, Turkey, was actually that of Christian Atsu, Ghanaians were thrown into a period of mourning on Saturday, February 18.

Christian Atsu had been missing since the earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria on February6, and the search for him had been intense.

After that, his remains was transported to Ghana, where a quick ceremony was held to welcome him to the nation.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the top government representative present at the ceremony, declared that the government would work with the family to provide Atsu with a dignified funeral.

Ex-teammates, famous people, and political officials have flocked to his family’s home in Accra, making it the busiest place to pay their condolences.

His family has decided that the one-week observance will begin on March 4.
