The Kennedy Agyapong Agenda: More Of Political Convenience Than A Solution

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, an accomplished economist and former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, who served as Vice President of the Republic, remains the most qualified and best-positioned candidate to lead the NPP’s revival. His defeat in the 2024 elections was not a direct reflection of his capabilities or vision, but a consequence of accumulated public discontent with the broader party governance -rooted in economic hardships and strained relations under the Akufo-Addo administration.

In the aftermath of the 2024 general elections, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) faces an existential moment, one that demands clarity, experience, and proven competence over emotional reactions and political expediency. The current tide of projecting Honourable Kennedy Agyapong as the party’s saving grace is not only premature but also misguided. It is a political convenience, not a genuine solution to the real challenges confronting the party.

To hold Dr. Bawumia solely accountable for the party’s loss is intellectually dishonest. He inherited systemic economic difficulties and sought innovative interventions to stabilize the country. His digital transformation agenda alone has laid foundational pillars for a modern Ghana. His leadership is marked by humility, a firm grasp of national issues, and a global outlook.

On the other hand, Honourable Kennedy Agyapong, while a successful businessman and vocal parliamentarian, has not demonstrated the temperament, policy depth, or governance acumen needed to steer a complex nation like Ghana. His campaign rides primarily on public frustration, not on tested solutions. In moments like these, populism can be tempting, but Ghana needs substance over showmanship.

If the NPP is serious about reclaiming power in 2028, it must choose vision over vengeance, competence over convenience, and stability over sentiment. Dr. Bawumia represents the party’s best chance at renewal, not just because of who he is, but because of what he has done and what he still can do.

It is time to build, not to gamble!
