National Coordinator for the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP), Mr Albert Yelyang has called for Minister for Special Development Initiatives, Mavis Hawa Koomson’s gun to be seized from her.

This comes after Hawa Koomson who doubles as Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency admitted to firing a gun at a voters registration centre in her constituecncy.

According to her, she had to do that as an act of self defense because her personal security had not yet reported for work.

“I’m a Member of Parliament, I need to protect myself. It was at dawn, my police escort had not started work yet. So that is a mechanism I have adopted in his absence,” she said.

Speaking on Atinka TV in reaction, WANEP said “the gun should be taken from her because if you have a gun and do not know how to use it then it should be taken from you. Before you are given a gun, you are taken through a test to check your temperament, but this is a case where she fired at a small mishap.”

WANEP further called for investigations and possible prosecution should Hawa Koomson be found guilty.

“The investigation should go on and if she is culpable they should prosecute her to serve as a deterrent to others. If we do not curb this menace now, it will be very difficult to do so during the 2020 elections,” Mr Albert Yelyang said.

On her resignation or possible sack he said, “If she does not resign and the president does not sack her, her people should vote against her. You do not use violence to win the election. If you are engaged in violence it means you are anxious.”
