Residents Block Road Over Escaping Suspected Criminals, 8 Arrested

The youth of Akuapem Asenema in Okere District in the Eastern Region on Tuesday night blocked a section of the Nkurakan to Adukrom Highway over a suspected car snatching incident.

The residents received a distress call Tuesday evening around 9:00pm from other communities along the road that some suspected criminals were bolting with a vehicle towards the Asenema Township.

According to an eyewitness, upon receipt of information, the youth mobilized during the night to block the road with wood, blocks, and other implements to prevent the suspects who were in a private car and taxi from escaping.

A police patrol team from Adukrom swiftly arrived at the scene and arrested the eight (8) suspects blocked by the mob.

A search in the taxi found a slaughtered dog and other undisclosed items.

The suspects were incoherent about where they were going and hence taken to Adukrom police station for further interrogation.

The Adukrom police is however yet to speak to the media.

Asenema came into the news two weeks ago in connection with dawn which occurred at 1:40am at a gas filling station at Akuapem Larteh junction.

Inspector Albert Kuntu Blankson, who was on night duty at Yokwa Gas filling station at Larteh-junction Akuapem, came under attack by three armed robbers at about 1:00am in an attempt to rob the gas filling station.

One of the armed robbers fired at the police officer but he managed to take cover, assumed a shooting position, and returned fire.

One of the robbers was shot forcing the others to escape.

The police officer called for reinforcement and the Divisional Crime Officer, DSP John Agyuah in charge of four personnel proceeded to the scene of the crime.

On arrival, the team met Inspector Albert Kuntu Blankson standing at the gate of the filling station and pointed out the suspect lying 10 meters away from the filling station.

An inspection of his body found a wound on his right upper part of the waist. He has briefly interrogated and the suspect mentioned his name as Ernest Antwi, 28, from Asante-Mampong. He also revealed the identity of his accomplices as Maxwell and Kwame.

The police team combed the area but could not find the accomplices.

The injured robber was rushed to Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital.

The robber said they slept at Akuapem Asenema where they planned the operation.
