Former President John Agyekum Kufuor and his wife Theresa Kufuor said they are saddened by news of the death of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

In a statement today, the former president said the news came as a “thunderbolt” to him, his wife and their children.

Former President Kufuor noted that the late Rawlings was the longest serving head of state of Ghana since independence in 1957 and “even though it wasn’t always he and I agreed on many matters of state – I felt he was trying to do the best he knew and could under his peculiar circumstance.”

He lauded the late former president for handing over power to him in 2001 as required by the 1992 Constitution, in spite of the reservations he had about him (Kufuor) and his government.

“In this regard, whatever doubt persisted about his commitment to democratic rule became attenuated and earned him a legacy of contributing to the sustenance of democratic governance of our country till his demise,” former President Kufuor said.

He said history will give Rawlings a balanced place in the annals of Ghana, adding that Ghanaians are left now to mourn the late former president and to console his widow, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings and their four children, Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina and Kimathi.
