
President John Dramani Mahama has named Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA). This appointment, announced on January 24, 2025, marks a historic milestone as he becomes the first individual from within the organization to ascend to this prestigious role.
Rev. Ing. Fianko boasts a distinguished career spanning over two decades, characterized by significant contributions to radio frequency spectrum management, telecommunications, broadcasting regulation, and ICT innovation. His journey with the NCA began in 2004 as a National Service Personnel. Demonstrating consistent dedication and expertise, he climbed the ranks and was appointed Director of the Engineering Division in January 2024.
In his capacity as Director of Engineering, Rev. Ing. Fianko oversaw the management of Ghana’s radio frequency spectrum, championed fair competition as Chair of the Significant Market Power Operations Team, and played an instrumental role in Ghana’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. Notably, he spearheaded the development of specifications for Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) receivers, which were later adopted as ECOWAS standards.
His influence extends beyond Ghana’s borders, with active participation in shaping telecommunications policies across Africa. He has contributed significantly to organizations such as the African Telecommunication Union (ATU), ECOWAS, and the Regional African Satellite Communication Organization (RASCOM). His global expertise was further acknowledged in 2022 when he was elected to the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) prestigious Radio Regulations Board (RRB) for the 2023–2026 term.
Rev. Ing. Fianko is highly credentialed, holding degrees in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Communications Management from Buckinghamshire New University, and Applied Business Leadership from Universidad Católica de Murcia.
In addition to his technical and regulatory accomplishments, Rev. Ing. Fianko is an ordained Minister of the Methodist Church Ghana, a published author, and the founder of the Nkwa.Life evangelistic outreach ministry, highlighting his multifaceted leadership and service to society.
As he takes over from Dr. Joe Anokye, Rev. Ing. Fianko brings a wealth of experience, technical knowledge, and visionary leadership to his new role. His appointment is expected to drive further innovation and growth within Ghana’s communications sector, setting the stage for significant advancements in the industry.
