OccupyGhana Condemns Government For Breaking COVID-19 Protocols During Sir John’s Funeral

Published

on

Pressure group OccupyGhana has criticised the government over the wanton disregard of COVID-19 rules at the funeral of the former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (Sir John).

Hundreds of mourners converged on the Sakora Wonoo Junior High School in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region, including President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame and prominent members of the NPP.

The body of Sir John was preserved for months for the mammoth funeral and final rite despite a ban on funerals and large social gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most recently, police prosecuted leaders of the Christ Embassy Church for holding similar social gatherings for religious purposes.

Below is the statement from Occupy Ghana

OCCUPYGHANA DEPLORES WANTON DISREGARD FOR PUBLIC SAFETY, ENABLING ANOTHER POTENTIAL SUPER SPREADER EVENT

OccupyGhana has watched with consternation news reports, videos and photographs of the funeral and burial of New Patriotic Party politician and former Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, which event packed thousands of politicians, well-wishers and mourners into a park, with minimal mask-wearing, absolutely no social distancing and a wanton disregard for the funeral restrictions imposed by the government.

We do not think that what happened did justice to the memory of a man who was reputed to be a man of discipline.

In our press release of 2 May 2021 regarding the holding of the Christ Embassy religious event at the Fantasy Dome, we thought no reminders were needed that the dangerous and deadly COVID-19 was still present and active among us. In that release, we hailed government’s imposition of protocols by law, which we believe demand compliance, by all.

To wake up to contrary behaviour by prominent members of the same government and other politicians, after we have seen the colossal human disaster that has unfolded in India, caused by unrestrained political activities and religious events that did not respect COVID-19 protocols, is both disappointing and frightening.

We cannot show such a remarkable sense of recklessness and abandon in these times and not expect to reap disastrous and possibly deadly consequences. We need no reminders that by exercising bad judgment in releasing Aisha Huang, government created a defiant galamsey population on its hands and more destruction of our water bodies and forests ensued until it had to resort to the illegal and populist remedy of burning excavators to try and stem the tide of evil genie unleashed with the release of Aisha Huang. Similarly, this disregard of the law will embolden several people to treat COVID-19 protocols with disdain and contempt.

We saw and read about the police charging the people who organised the Christ Embassy event with offences under the Imposition of Restrictions Act. We have seen the Police resort to court injunctions and threats of force to stop the planned #fixGhana protests and demonstrations, with the weak excuse that they will defy the same Act.

We hasten to ask whether the government has any moral authority now where these matters are concerned?
While extending to Sir John and his family all the deserving courtesies, respect and condolences, the irony is not lost on us that due to COVID-19, a British Royal and Duke had only 30 people in attendance at his funeral.

The whole world witnessed it, and we thought much lessons could have been gleaned from that utterly humane event around a person of global stature.

This behaviour of people in a position to know better is deeply worrying, and while we can only pray that it doesn’t happen, if in weeks this event turns out to be a super spreader event with more deaths and hospitalisations, government will have no one but itself to blame for its inability and unwillingness to show a better example.

We repeat our often-repeated call on all Ghanaians to keep respecting the COVID-19 protocols in all situations. We must protect ourselves and our loved ones, even when people who should know better break the law while enforcing it against others.

Yours, for God and Country

OccupyGhana

Murderers In Ghana Must Be Killed If Need Be – Deputy Attorney General Nominee

Published

on

A Deputy Attorney General nominee, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah says Ghana’s death penalty law must not be scrapped to deter people from committing heinous crimes.

Taking his turn on Parliament’s Appointment Committee, he said abolishing the death penalty will only empower people to end other people’s lives knowing they’ll only serve a jail term.

To him, if murderers have to be killed, they must be killed.

“If we look at some of the murder cases that we’ve seen, especially when it comes to robbery with murder and the callous nature that some of them carry out those actions”, then he is against abolishing capital punishment – at least, for now.

“I equally also hold this view that, as it exists in the USA, if stakeholders may want to venture into grading murders, I subscribe to the full execution of their sentences”, insisting: “If the person is a murderer, and they have to be killed, they must be killed.”

God Used Akufo-Addo To Endorse Me In 2020 Elections; It Was No Mistake – Nii Lante Vanderpuye

Published

on

Lawmaker for Odododiodio, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has insisted that it was no coincidence that President Akufo-Addo mentioned his name during a rally ahead of the 2020 polls instead of the NPP candidate’s name.

The President while introducing the NPP Parliamentary candidate and calling on electorates to vote for him, mentioned Nii Lante Vanderpuye instead of Nii Lante Bannerman; although he quickly took back his words.

Speaking on Onua FM, the Odododiodio MP said it was no coincidence that his name was mentioned rather God’s doing.

“It wasn’t Nana Addo Dankwa’s decision or idea to mention my name. It was God. God used him to endorse me in the elections. Nobody can tell me that Nana Addo did not know the name of his candidate because he had work with him for years,” he was quoted by 3news.

He continued: “It was because of the prayers and fasting on my part that resulted in Nana addo mentioning my name.”

‘Hypocrite’ Kufour Is A ‘Snake Under Grass’ – Sekou Nkrumah

Published

on

Sekou Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah has lashed out at former president John Agyekum Kufour branding him a ‘snake under grass’.

According to him, Kufour had deep hatred for Dr Kwame Nkrumah and had been running him in doing even in detention after Ignatius Kutu Acheampong overthrew Busia in the 1972 coup.

To him, professor Adu Boahen is the most honest politician NPP has ever had.

“Will it surprise Ghanaians to know that during his days in cells (political detention after the Acheampong coup that overthrew Busia in 1972), this very Kufuor was running Kwame Nkrumah down? I was told several stories from one of his cellmates about his hatred of Nkrumah!, Sekou Nkrumah wrote on Facebook.

He continued: “The first time I met Kufuor was at the Hearts Park behind the Arts Centre, it was at a political rally organized by the opposition somewhere in the 1990s. On the surface, he appears like a nice guy, but is a snake under [the] grass! For me personally, Professor Adu Boahene (who lost the 1992 elections to NDC) although an opponent of Nkrumah’s ideology was a more honest leader of NPP.”
