No Bed Syndrome In Ghana Persists Due To ‘Politics And Witchcraft’ – Sam George

Ningo Prampram lawmaker, Sam George has bemoaned the persistent no bed syndrome in the country’s major hospitals.

His reaction comes after the death of a 12-year old boy in his constituency who died as a result of no available beds at the Korlebu Hospital and 37.

“The problem of fixing the health sector is politics and witchcraft,” George told Bernard Avle on Citi TV.

He noted that “calls were made to 37 Military Hospital, and they agreed to take the child. This was about 3 pm. Then the next hurdle began. The National Ambulance Service was called to transport the child. Getting the Service was another issue entirely. After getting the service, they insisted that they cannot move the child until they got their own independent confirmation from 37 Military Hospital. For well over five hours, they could not get anyone from 37 to confirm.

He questioned why government has refused to operationalise the UGMC because as at the time the boy died, there were available beds at UGMC.

“The referral hospitals you have are either Korle Bu, 37, Ridge or UGMC – which is supposed to be a quaternary level hospital – but for some reason, [….] we’ve decided that UGMC will not be fully utilized,” he said.

According to him, the UGMC is the same hospital politicians in the country travel outside the country to yet they refuse to let it operate here for citizens to benefit.
