Ras Mubarak, a leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized Onua TV for allowing its platform to be used to incite violence, following the recent bloody clash in Obuasi. Mubarak expressed his concerns over the station’s role in the events, which he believes contributed to the lawlessness that occurred.

In a strongly-worded statement shared via social media, Mubarak placed responsibility for the violence at the doorstep of the television station. He condemned the media outlet for what he described as a reckless misuse of free speech.

“We’ve come a long way and must not, in the name of free speech, allow media houses to be used as vessels to incite violence. We can’t live in a country with such wanton indiscipline,” Mubarak stated.

He emphasized that acts of thuggery and lawlessness have no place in Ghana, urging citizens and authorities to address these issues before they escalate further.

The controversy stems from remarks made by television personality Captain Smart, who is accused of inciting illegal miners in Obuasi to invade the AngloGold Ashanti mine. In a widely circulated video, Captain Smart allegedly encouraged the youth in the area to attack the mine and claim its resources, citing poor leadership and economic struggles as justifications.

“Ghanaian youth in Obuasi, go to the mine. Attack the mine and take what you want so that when you get hungry, you get something to eat,” Captain Smart said during a broadcast on Onua TV.

He further criticized AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) for its operations, claiming that the company was harming the community and depriving locals of economic opportunities.

Mubarak, however, cautioned against such rhetoric, warning that it fosters indiscipline and undermines the rule of law. “Thuggery and any other acts of lawlessness must have no place in the Ghana we all want. We sit aloof at our own peril,” he reiterated.

The incident has sparked widespread debate, with many calling for greater accountability from media outlets and public figures. Critics argue that inflammatory remarks broadcast on national platforms can have dangerous consequences, particularly in regions grappling with economic hardships.

The role of media in promoting peace and stability has come under the spotlight, as stakeholders urge regulatory bodies to enforce stricter standards to prevent the incitement of violence. Meanwhile, Ras Mubarak’s comments reflect growing concerns about the influence of sensationalist media content in Ghana’s socio-political landscape.
