NDC ‘Pounces’ On John Boadu For Attack On Speaker Of Parliament
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned the General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu after he accused the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin of engaging in partisan politics.
Bagbin had accused John Boadu of claiming the NPP has no majority and almost conceded losing to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Bagbin had also claimed that John Boadu at some point conceded that the NPP had lost majority of the seats in Parliament to the NDC in the 2020 polls.
In a strong worded rebuttal, John Boadu charged Mr Bagbin to rise above partisan politics and focus on his job as Speaker of Parliament.
He insisted that the claims are untrue describing it as ‘outlandish and preposterous’, while adding that throughout the vote counting process, he held the position that his party would form the majority.
“First of all, the claim by Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin is a blatant falsehood as the General Secretary John Boadu had, at no point, made any suggestion or announcement to that effect. Indeed, records have it that, in all the post-election press conferences and media engagements, the NPP, through its General Secretary and other leading members, had always maintained that it had won majority of the parliamentary seats,” parts of the statement read.
The NDC however, in a rebuttal, dated August 23, refers to Mr Boadu’s reaction as an “attack” on the Speaker and asked Mr Boadu to take responsibility for the comments attributed to him.
“We condemn in no uncertain terms John Boadu’s unwarranted attacks on the Rt. Honourable Speaker of Parliament, A.S.K. Bagbin for speaking the truth. We wish to state categorically that John Boadu cannot run away from his own words. He must have the courage to accept authorship of the above words and boldly stand by same”.
They further insist that there is video evidence which proves that John Boadu admitted that the NDC won a majority in Parliament.
In the said video, the NDC said Mr Boadu was heard to have admitted the NDC had won a majority in Parliament.
“Nana Addo Dankwa won overwhelmingly the presidential elections with a margin of over seven hundred thousand BUT… WE LOST THE PARLIAMENTARY. THE NDC WON even with a lesser margin. It is on that basis the Ghanaian people decided”, the statement reads in part.
