NDC Appeals to Supreme Court to Review Ruling On Excluding Old Voter IDs, Birth Certs for Voter Registration

The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has appealed to the Supreme Court to retake a look at its ruling on excluding birth certificates and existing voter IDs from the voter registration.

The party’s Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi in a press statement on Friday July 24, noted that the party’s lawyers have filed for a review to the apex court’s earlier decision.

“As a political party, when the judgement was delivered, we did not hide our disappointment, but we were powerless to do anything about it at the time because the reasons for the judgement were not given until 15 July 2020, 20 days after the judgement was announced,” the statement read.

It added, “After that, our lawyers went to work; and true to our expectation, they have come back with a number of very cogent reasons why they think the judgement of the Supreme Court was wrong.

“We have therefore placed our concerns before the Supreme Court for it to take a second look at its own judgement, and if possible, change its position on matters that we think are fundamental to citizenship and the right to vote in this country.”

The Supreme Court a month ago ruled in favour of the Electoral Commssion to go ahead with the voters card registration by excluding birth certificates and old voter card as proof of Ghanaian citizenship.
