The Ministry of Education has refuted recent media reports claiming that the government plans to abolish the teacher trainee allowance, labeling the allegations as sensational and inaccurate. The Ministry’s response comes after a front-page story in the Tuesday, February 4, 2025, edition of The Daily Graphic headlined “Teacher Trainee Allowance to go.”
In an official statement, the Ministry clarified that the report misrepresented remarks made by the Minister of Education during a meeting with executives of the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF). The statement emphasized that the Minister’s comments were taken out of context and did not suggest the discontinuation of the allowance.
According to the Ministry, the Minister had explained that the government is exploring ways to address the financial needs of students in Colleges of Education. “During his discussion with PRINCOF executives, the Minister stated that the government is open to enhancing financial support for students, including considering an improved loan scheme if necessary,” the statement read.
The Ministry further clarified that the Minister had explicitly assured stakeholders that the teacher trainee allowance would remain in place until thorough deliberations and a consensus are reached with all relevant parties. “The government is committed to maintaining the allowances until further discussions and a firm agreement are finalized,” the statement added.
The Ministry urged The Daily Graphic to correct the “misleading impression” created by its report and to give the Ministry’s rebuttal equal prominence. It also called on media outlets to verify information with the Ministry before publication to prevent unnecessary confusion and concern among stakeholders.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to transparent communication and collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure the continued development of the education sector.
