Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to President John Dramani Mahama, has addressed public concerns regarding the President’s use of a private jet owned by his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for official trips to Senegal and The Gambia.
In a statement responding to criticisms, Kwakye Ofosu clarified that the private jet has been available for President Mahama’s use since before the 2024 general elections. He assured the public that this arrangement has incurred no expense to the Ghanaian taxpayer, as the private jet was made available free of charge.
“The most critical point is that this alternative arrangement has not in any way, shape, or form cost the Ghanaian taxpayer a dime,” Kwakye Ofosu said during an interview with TV3. “President Mahama is mindful of the precarious economic situation and is committed to utilising public funds prudently.”
Kwakye Ofosu explained that the official presidential aircraft is currently undergoing a review by the Communications Squadron, the Air Force unit responsible for its operation. This, he noted, necessitated the temporary use of the private jet.
He further emphasized President Mahama’s commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility, assuring the public that the President will resume the use of the official presidential jet once the review is completed.
“The president is focused on ensuring the best outcomes for Ghana, especially during these economically challenging times,” Kwakye Ofosu added, reaffirming President Mahama’s dedication to the prudent management of state resources.
The statement comes amid heightened scrutiny of government expenditures in light of Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges, characterized by inflation, currency depreciation, and fiscal constraints. The clarification seeks to dispel concerns and reassure citizens of the President’s commitment to responsible leadership.
