During his parliamentary vetting on January 24, 2025, Interior Minister-designate Muntaka Mubarak stated that he could not confirm whether the John Dramani Mahama administration would retain or remove George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector General of Police (IGP). Mubarak emphasized that any decisions regarding the leadership of the security apparatus would align with President Mahama’s vision for the country.

Mubarak hinted at a comprehensive review of Ghana’s security framework to ensure it aligns with the President’s objectives. He assured the Parliament’s Appointments Committee that, if approved, he would conduct a thorough assessment of all team members within the security sector.

“His Excellency President Mahama has a clear vision for Ghana, and Ghanaians have entrusted him with the mandate to execute it. We will review the security apparatus to ensure it supports this vision and serves the national interest. However, I cannot make specific assurances about the fate of any individual, including the IGP,” Mubarak stated.

He clarified that, as Interior Minister, his role would be limited to making recommendations to the President, with the final decision resting solely with President Mahama. “I do not have the authority to unilaterally decide who stays or goes. My responsibility is to provide recommendations to His Excellency, who will make the ultimate decision in the best interest of the nation,” he explained.

Mubarak praised the current efforts of the security forces, noting their dedication to maintaining safety and order. “Since my nomination, I have observed the commitment of our security personnel. They are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of all Ghanaians,” he added.

The Minister-designate’s comments have sparked discussions about potential changes in the leadership of Ghana’s security services as the Mahama administration prepares to implement its agenda. However, Mubarak’s emphasis on due process and alignment with national interests suggests that any decisions will be carefully considered and strategic.

As the vetting process continues, Ghanaians await further clarity on the future of the country’s security leadership under the new government.
