How Did You Get That 138 Number? – Kyei-Mensah Asks Bagbin; Insists He Was Elected By Consensus

Published

on

Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has refuted claims that Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin won by 138 votes.

This comes after Bagbin himself confirmed on the floor of Parliament that he won the Speakership with 138 votes, however, Kyei-Mensah disagrees.

In a panel discussion on Joy FM’s Newsfile, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu queried “how did he come by that” insisting that the election of the Speaker was by consensus.

“When we went into the dialogue I said there should be a rerun…then Haruna went out to consult his people came back and flatly rejected my position. Then I suggested us to swear in Bagbin as Speaker then later we conduct the election afresh…Haruna stepped out again to consult and came back with a disagreement and then Okudjeto who was following him (Haruna) said Bagbin should be sworn in as the Speaker…finally we then said by consensus that Bagbin won without premising it on any number……” he stressed.

It’s Not Too Late To Call And Congratulate Akufo-Addo – NPP To Mahama

Published

on

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the 2020 Presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama to accept the court verdict concerning his petition and congratulate President Akufo-Addo just as he did for him in 2013.

“Following the lucid judgment of the Supreme Court, many had expected the petitioner, John Mahama, to emulate the good examples of the petitioner in the 2012 Elections Petition, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who, even though, disagreed with the judgement of the Supreme Court at the time, ACCEPTED the decision and CONGRATULATED the then President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, in the interest of the nation,” John Boadu, General Secretary of the NPP said in a press release.

“It is not too late for John Mahama to call H.E. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, whose emphatic 2020 election victory has been affirmed by the Supreme Court, to congratulate him. It is on account of this that the NPP is calling on the former President, John Dramani Mahama, to do the needful in the collective interest of our nation”

Below is the full statement:

NPP CALLS ON JOHN MAHAMA TO DEMONSTRATE STATESMANSHIP AND ACCEPT THE VERDICT OF THE SUPREME COURT ON THE 2020 ELECTION PETITION

The NPP is calling on the NDC’s 2020 Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama, to accept the verdict of the Supreme Court on the 2020 Election Petition, as a mark of statesmanship and fidelity to the rule of law, even if he disagrees with the judgment.

After two months of hearing the petition filed by John Mahama challenging the validity of the declaration of the results of the 2020 General Elections, the nation’s Apex Court, on Thursday, March 4, 2021, delivered its final judgment dismissing the petition as lacking merit. Following the lucid judgment of the Supreme Court, many had expected the petitioner, John Mahama, to emulate the good examples of the petitioner in the 2012 Elections Petition, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who, even though, disagreed with the judgement of the Supreme Court at the time, ACCEPTED the decision and CONGRATULATED the then President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, in the interest of the nation. For the avoidance of doubt, these were the exact words of the then petitioner, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, immediately after the Supreme Court ruling on August 29, 2013, despite the fact that at least 4 out of the 9 justices of the Supreme Court ruled in his favor: “I have called President John Dramani Mahama and I congratulated him on being elected the fourth President of our country. The Supreme Court of our nation has spoken, and the results of the December 2012 presidential elections has been confirmed as having been won by the candidate of the NDC, President Mahama. As I said earlier, whilst I disagree with the court’s decision, I accept it.

I accept that what the court said, brings finality to the election dispute. We shall not be asking for a review of the verdict so we can all move on in the interest of our nation… I am saddened by the verdict and I know that many of our supporters are saddened too. However, for the sake and love of our country, we must embark on a path that builds rather than destroys to deal with our disappointments”.

This singular act of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo did not only reaffirm his longstanding fidelity to the rule of law as a consummate democrat, and to his country and citizens, but also earned him and the country international accolades and plaudits. As indicated, many had expected John Mahama to take advantage of similar situation on March 4, to prove his commitment to democratic tenets, but that never happened, unfortunately.

Instead, John Mahama would rather hold a press conference to unleash invectives and unprovoked attacks on the judiciary and the election management body much to the chagrin of democratic observers and the generality of the Ghanaian people. The gravamen of his attacks on these two important state institutions was that the Supreme Court had shielded the chairperson of the commission from testifying in court.

John Mahama alleges, inter alia, that, the Supreme Court did not give him justice, and that, the Court aided the EC Chairperson “to avoid explaining to the good people of Ghana from her own testimony, under oath in a properly constituted court of law, the errors she herself admits to have committed in the declaration of the 2020 Presidential election results.

Whatever the reasons for not allowing Mrs. Jean Mensa to testify or answer any questions, it leaves, it leaves an embarrassing stain, not only on our justice delivery system but also on the nation’s electoral system. The Supreme Court has given its verdict, but the national debate on the dismal state of our democracy and the increasing weakness of its institutions has only just begun. It is time we all come together to confront those who seek to destroy the very democratic system that brought them into office. It is our patriotic duty to do so”.

These harsh words and imputations coming from John Mahama, a former President of the Republic still baffles many, particularly because the Supreme Court, as has been explained, has only stuck to the time-tested principle of the common law practice and for that matter the position of our legal system on civil litigation, that, YOU WIN IN COURT BASED ON THE STRENGTH OF YOUR OWN CASE AND NOT BASED ON THE SUPPOSED WEAKNESSES OF YOUR OPPONENT’S CASE.

Indeed, the nation’s Supreme Court once held that it would be MADNESS to allow a party depend on his opponent in order to prove his case. John Mahama certainly shouldn’t expect the Supreme Court of Ghana to do what it clearly said would amount to madness. It would also be recalled that John Mahama stated in 2013 that, “The Courts cannot give you what the people have not given you”. We agreed with him then, and we still do agree with him today on this profound statement.

Well, John Mahama may have lost an opportunity to repeat the enviable feat achieved by President Akufo-Addo in 2012 and get his name written in the history books of consummate and patriotic democrats, but it is certainly not too late for him to right the wrong. It is not too late for John Mahama to come to terms with his fate and accept the verdict of the nation’s Apex Court even if he disagrees with the judgement. It is not too late for John Mahama to call H.E. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, whose emphatic 2020 election victory has been affirmed by the Supreme Court, to congratulate him. It is on account of this that the NPP is calling on the former President, John Dramani Mahama, to do the needful in the collective interest of our nation. Finally, the NPP wishes to use this opportunity to once again congratulate H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, whose emphatic re-election victory as the winner of the 2020 polls, has been unanimously confirmed by the Supreme Court verdict, as a true and accurate reflection of the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people.

The party is once again thankful to the members of the 2nd Respondent’s legal team led by the venerable Akoto Ampaw Esq., Frank Davies Esq., Kwaku Asirifi Esq., and Yaw Oppong Esq., as well as their supporting staff. Equally, the NPP is grateful to the bench and its staff, the media, the security agencies, party supporters and indeed all persons who have played diverse roles towards the attainment of this feat, which has further strengthened the country’s democratic credentials.

Alabi’s Failure Has Put NDC In Serious Crisis – Atubiga

Published

on

Prof Joshua Alabi woefully failed as campaign manager for John Dramani Mahama in the 2020 polls, a former flag bearer aspirant of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Stephen Atubiga, has said.

According to him, the lapses at the Electoral Commission’s strong room during polls could have been prevented if he was more effective at his work.

“Mac Manu was there [Strong Room]. Prof Alabi was supposed to be at the EC’s office to make sure that our results, John Dramani Mahama’s results were accounted for; the party’s results were also accounted for. That didn’t happen. He also did not coordinate well to make sure that a national executive person was at the EC headquarters”, Mr Atubiga said.

Mr Atubiga believes Mr Mahama “won this election but our negligence started from our campaign manager’s office and then the irresponsible representatives that we had in the EC’s office”.

“We’re in crisis. Our party is in serious crisis. There is loyalty crisis. There is integrity crisis internally. What I mean by integrity crisis is: there is a lot of circumstances that led to our loss. We are in crisis right now – our MPs, who we look up to as our government, right now there is crisis in the inner circle extended to the youth; they are agitating but I want to say that we should calm down, it’s not all lost, we’ll resolve our problems but at this moment, the NDC is in crisis”.

“It is the most serious crisis, turbulence that we are going through from how we betrayed the candidate. There was a big alleged betrayal that has led to our loss. This loss is one of the most unacceptable, unfortunate and painful loss that we were not supposed to have incurred”.

‘NDC Polling Agents Sold Our Pink Sheets To NPP For GHS2K, GHS5K’ – Atubiga Boldly Claims

Published

on

A member of the Communications Team of the NDC, Stephen Atubiga has boldly claimed that some polling agents of the party in some constituencies sold NDC’s copies of the pink sheets of the 7 December 2020 polls, to people within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for between GHS2,000 and GHS5,000.

Speaking on Class FM’s Mid-day news programme he said, “I’m spilling the beans today: there’s an allegation of some of our people, our boys, who sold the pink sheets out, they sold our pink sheets for between GHS2,000 and GHS5,000. I’m telling you. Put me on record.”

He said such “greed” conspired with “negligence and personal interests” to rob the NDC of victory in the polls.

He further indicated that he’ll be petitioning the leadership of the party to launch investigations into his claims.

“…The IT directors, Griffiths; they all have questions to answer when we go for the petition. They have to tell us: did our system break down? With IT today, we are supposed to have the 275 pink sheets, even if not anything, electronically taking pictures and sending to us”, he noted.

“But put me on record that there is an allegation that most of our members sold our pink sheets out from GHS2,000 to GHS5,000 and ran away with it. So, there’s going to be an official petition by me, Stephen Atubiga, on behalf of the youth”, he reiterated.
