Haruna Iddrisu Calls For Audit Of Payments Refunded To Depositors Of Collapsed Banks

The Minority in Parliament is calling for an audit of payments made to customers who had their deposits locked up during the financial sector clean up.

The Minority is demanding this audit after the government said it has paid off 96% of depositors’ monies.

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, in a press briefing on Monday, said his side in Parliament wanted “greater transparency and accountability from government.”

He stated that the Banks and Specialised Deposits Taking Institutions Act 930 section 130 requires an inventory report from the receiver “one month of taking possession of a bank or specialised deposit-taking institution.”

Haruna Iddrisu challenged that the Bank of Ghana must publish the inventory report in atleast two daily newspapers of national circulation and on the Bank’s website.

“We are asking, where is the inventory report on the collapsed banks and on the microfinance and savings institutions? Was it remitted to the Bank of Ghana? If yes, where is it?”

He impressed it upon the government to respect the “letter and spirit of the law in question.”
