Growth In Telcoms Sector Not Down To Dr. Bawumia – Sam George

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George has stated that the growth in the telecommunications sector can be attributed to the initiatives of private companies in the sector and not government policies.

He said the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia is trying to reap where he did not sow for the growth in mobile money usage in the country when he has not done anything directly to ensure its success.

Speaking to the press on Friday, he said the mobile money interoperability and mobile financial system cannot be said to be entirely the work of government.

“Dr. Bawumia has failed and sought to throw dust into our eyes with his representation of mobile money interoperability. Last year, MTN celebrated 10 years of MoMo, they are in their 11th year now. 11 years ago was Dr. Bawumia the Vice President? So how then can he claim that this is his initiative? The growth in the industry is by way of the work that the telcos themselves are doing,” Sam George said.

The Vice President, Dr. Bawumia while speaking at a youth forum earlier in the week said fifteen million Ghanaians have bank accounts due to the implementation of the Mobile Money payment interoperability.

“Anyone with a mobile account has a bank account. They can make payments out of it and receive interest on their balances…Many people did not and do not understand that we have moved away from the world of branch banking into branchless banking. You can have your bank account on your phone. You can do banking without visiting a bank branch or signing a cheque,” the Vice President said.

But Sam George says the Vice President’s claims are misleading.

“The issuance of interests [loans], insurance, free transfer charges [are responsible for the growth]. The growth is as a result of the initiatives of the telcos themselves and not Dr. Bawumia. He should come again and tell us what real initiative he has put to account for the growth in the mobile money industry. If he has made a promise and failed, he should be humble enough to tell us that he made a promise and he has failed. He promised that every Ghanaian will have a bank account and, he did not say every Ghanaian will have a MoMo account,” he said.

Peace FM Begs NDC To Return To ‘Kokrokoo’ Show

The mother station of Despite Media, Peace 104.3 FM has pleaded with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reconsider their stance concerning their morning show, Kokrokoo.

In a statement signed by the managing director, Fada Dickson, the station noted that they’re not at loggerheads with the NDC and accept blame for whatever situation that led to their boycott.

“Since the inception of Peace FM on May 25, 1999, we have had a mutually beneficial relationship with all political parties, including the NDC”.

“However, in recent times, there has been a misunderstanding between us and the NDC in relation to the panelling of the discussion segment of the Kokrokoo show”.

“The management of Despite Media, acknowledges responsibility for whatever misunderstanding that has arisen between us and the NDC in recent times”.

“We, therefore, urge the NDC to let sleeping dogs lie and allow harmony to reign and return to the Kokrokoo show”.

“As agents and stakeholders of development, we may agree to disagree, all for the sake of Ghana, our motherland”, the statement addressed to NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia said.

Take A Cue From Otumfuo And Stop Endorsing Politicians – Lawyer Ampaw Tells Chiefs

Private legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw has urged chiefs to shy away from endorsing politicians and their parties but rather wish them well and sell their communal needs to them.

Speaking to Ghanaweb, Lawyer Ampaw referenced Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as a good example other chiefs can emulate.

“Welcome any political party, tell them their needs and then avoid endorsing them and then wish them all the best so that you’ll always be seen as a unifier…they should emulate Otumfuo. Otumfuo will never endorse any political party…rather advises them and wishes them well so every traditional leader should emulate Otumfuo by advising the political parties, tell them what their subject needs in their traditional area and then wish them well,” he said.
