Group Petition Parliament To Reject Ofori Atta As Finance Minister On Grounds Of Incompetence

Ghana’s Parliament is under pressure to reject former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Attah who has been renominated by President Akufo-Addo to take up the top job.

Led by pressure group Alliance for Social and Public Accountability (ASEPA) the petition to the Speaker of Parliament indicted Mr Ofori-Attah of supervising the collapse of financial institutions which has led to pain and death of some depositors.

ASEPA is joined by the Coalition of Affected Customers of Savings and Loans Companies, Coalition of Menzgold Customers and the Coalition of Aggrieved Customers of Gold Coast to petition the Appointment Committee of Parliament.

“It is our contention that Mr Ken Ofori-Attah, between the period of 2017 and 2021, when he was Finance Minister acted in ways and manners that violated the Public Financial Management Act, The Fiscal Responsibility Act, The Public Procurement Law, The Financial Administration Act and other several misconducts which we have explained in our petition”, ASEPA’s Executive Director, Mensah Thompson said as reported by Joy FM.

“Later last year, the former Finance Minister, his deputy and even the President made false claims that over 98 percent of all these customers of financial institutions have been settled. When in actual fact only 18 percent have been settled. This led to a number of them losing their lives, some had their marriages collapsed and a number of them losing their household and their entire livelihood”.

Mr. Thompson said the appointment committee should put the interest of the country first by rejecting Mr. Ofori-Atta as the Finance Minister.

“We’re also sending a word of caution to members of the appointment committee that we know of plans far advanced to induce members of the appointments committee to approve the nomination of Mr Ken Ofori-Atta even though he knows for a fact that he’s unfit to occupy the position”, he added.

In addition “we are sending a word of caution to them that we’re watching them and the people of Ghana will hold you to account on their conduct on the committee. We are also sending a special warning to the members of the NDC caucus of parliament that this time round it is not business as usual that the minority will have their say but the majority will have their way.”
