Gov’t Declares July 31 Public Holiday To Mark Eid al-Adha

The Ministry of Interior has declared Friday, July 31 as a public holiday to mark Muslim festival celebration Eid al-Adha also called “Festival of the Sacrifice”.

In a press release signed by Interior Minister Ambrose Derry, he urged the public to observe the day as holiday throughout the country.

He further cautioned the public to adhere to the Covid-19 safety protocols amidst the celebrations.

Eid al-Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to follow Allah’s (God’s) command to sacrifice his son. Muslims around the world observe this event.

In Ghana, Eid al-Adha is kept up by all Muslims as the most important holiday of the year. It is known as “big Eid” in contrast to Eid ul-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan and is called “little Eid”.
