German Ambassador Flays Mahama Over Apɔtrɔ Car Comments

The German Ambassador to Ghana, Christoph Retzlaff has shot down claims by the Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress, as reported by the Daily Guide Newspaper that second-hand cars are better than the VW assembled vehicles in Ghana.

The NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, while addressing an Engagement with the Association of Garages in Sunyani made reference to the locally assembled VW vehicles as “Apɔtrɔ Car” or “Tɛfrɛ Car”.

“Apɔtrɔ and Tɛfrɛ” in local Akan dialect mean frog and cockroach respectively; names that were given to the famous VW beetle cars of old.

Mr Mahama while addressing the gathering explained that it was not prudent to maintain a ban on salvaged cars just because of a VW assembly plant in Ghana which employs less than 100 people.

The former President’s comment did not sit down well with NPP stalwart, Gabby Otchere Darko, who took to Twitter to question the NDC flagbearer’s assertions.

The German Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Christoph Retzlaff also disagreed with the NDC flagbearer’s assertions by insisting that all German cars are of excellent quality.
