#FixTheCountry Campaigners To Petition IGP Over Breach Of Covid-19 Protocols At Sir John’s Funeral

Published

on

#FixTheCountry convenor, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has promised to pursue a number of avenues to ensure that those responsible for breaching Covid-19 protocols at the funeral of the late General Secretary of the NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie are dealt with in accordance with the law.

One of such avenues is to file an formal complaint with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

Mr Barker-Vormawor, in an interview on PM:Express, indicated that after filing the petition to the IGP if a decision is made not to prosecute the individuals responsible for the breach of the Imposition of Restriction Act, the convenors of #FixTheCountry will “challenge the exercise of prosecutorial discretion around this in the Supreme Court.”

“So that is what we are going to do within the means of the law as much as citizens who want to be vigilant in the protection of our constitutional right,” he said.

He further described the failure of the country’s leaders to ensure the compliance of the Covid-19 protocols at Sir John’s funeral as “is a clear dereliction of duty” – one that should not be taken for granted.

Mr Barker-Vormawor further stated that “if the system that we have put in place fails to produce the results that our constitutional democracy expects, the best thing we can do is to continue to push that conversation.”

In the absence of that, he believes such blatant disregard of our laws by the nation’s political leaders will “continue to undermine the authority of the 1992 Constitution” and that may lead the country to “a point where the constitutional document will be so abused that the 4th Republic itself may be in jeopardy”.

He, however, noted that although our Constitution gives the president immunity because it “expects that certain things can be dealt with the political process”, every citizen has the right to “petition Parliament to call for the impeachment of the President”.

“Our constitution provides those remedies for us to test them and to hope that our constitutional democracy will grow from experiences like this… If the system that we have put in place fails to produce the result that our constitutional democracy expects, the best we can do is to continue to push that conversation.

His comment follows the burial ceremony held last week for the former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie which was attended by attended by thousands of mourners.

The President, his Vice and the Chief Justice and other Government functionaries were all present when hundreds of people crammed into each other in what the Ghana Medical Association described as a super spreader event.

The gathering was in breach of the Imposition of Restrictions Act, 2020 (Act 1012) and Covid-19 protocols were completely disregarded. There was no physical distancing and only few people wore face masks.

Ghana’s Democracy Is A ‘Caricature’; Democracy Of ‘Deceit’ – Emeritus Archbishop

Published

Former Archbishop of the Kumasi diocese of the Catholic Church Emeritus Archbishop Peter Akwasi Sarpong has questioned the kind of democracy the country practices.

Speaking in an interview on Akoma FM on Sunday, July 26 he wondered if the democracy being practiced is truly for the people or just a few.

He said the democracy as practiced in Ghana is only fraught with deceit, intimidation, bribery and corruption, resulting in politicians buying votes to go to Parliament in order to enrich themselves at the expense of the taxpayers.

“The democracy as practised in Ghana is a caricature of democracy. “It’s a caricature of democracy because what is democracy? Is it intimidation, is it deceit? Is it bribery? Is it corruption?” he quizzed.

Out Of Millions Of Ghanaians, Prez Mills Picked You To Be His Running Mate And You Failed To Honour Him – Anyidodo Drags Mahama

Published

on

Former President John Dramani Mahama failed to honour late President John Evans Atta-Mills after his death although he chose him as running mate in 2008, Koku Anyidoho has claimed.

Speaking on Okay FM, Anyidoho said Mr Mahama refused to rebuild the deteriorating Asomdwee park where Prez Mills was laid to rest.

He bemoned how all efforts to get the former president to renovate the place failed.

“I won’t go into details but we tried and tried. I will state publicly that John Mahama refused to rebuild Asomdwee Park. Out of millions of Ghanaians Late Prof. Mills picked you to be his running mate, we sold our manifesto and the millions of Ghanaians voted for President Mills to be the President and you became his vice. He passed on and you became President, I’m asking what has John Mahama done to honour the memory of late ex-President Attah Mills”? he quizzed.

Outgoing IGP Oppong Boanuh Creates Division In Police Service Following Last Minute Promotions?

Published

on

The outgoing Inspector General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh has got tensions brewing in the Police Service he promoted, in consultation and approval of the police council, one thousand, eight hundred and forty-two personnel with first degrees on and before 2008 to new ranks.

This move has created a rancour among the rank and file of the police with some expressing their unhappiness with the media.

A report by Starr FM stated that seventeen (17) corporals are moving to the rank of sergeant, nine hundred and eighty-nine (989) officers are moving from sergeant to Chief Inspector, and eight hundred and thirty-six are moving from Inspector to Chief Inspector with increased salaries.

Some of the Chief Inspectors who are unhappy with the move lamented to the media house about how they are to move from their position after twelve years for their juniors to take over.

“I actually don’t understand these promotions, look I am still Chief Inspector, someone who was my junior with the rank of an inspector is now with the same rank with me with enhanced and better conditions of service which recognized institution will encourage this?,” an angry Chief Inspector told Empire FM’s Emmanuel Ohene Gyan in Takoradi on Monday.

Another also lamented, “the new arrangement by Mr. Oppong-Buanoh means that I need to vacate my seat as a station officer for my junior to take over, this has seriously affected my morale.”
