A car thief seized a car from a military officer in broad daylight in Akyem Tafo in the Eastern region on Sunday, causing drama.

Sargent Eric Okyere Agyapong, a physical training teacher with the Northern Military Command Headquarters in Tamale who is currently on attachment at the Army recruit training school Shai Hills, paid a visit to his wife and children in Akyem Tafo around 1:40pm on Sunday, October 10, 2021.

His car, however, suffered a technical problem, so he borrowed his wife’s Hyundai Elantra saloon car, registration number ER 490 21, and drove it home to find a mechanic to fix the car for him.

The couple met the suspect at a mechanic shop, and during their talk, the suspect leapt into the couple’s car and drove away with it.

To pursue the culprit, the military commander hired a taxi.

When the suspect reached the Suhyen to Jumapo segment of the Bunso to Koforidua route, he collided into another vehicle.

The military commander sounded an alarm, and local youngsters, as well as police from a nearby checkpoint, rushed to the scene, but the suspect, who was said to have juju powers, resisted arrest.

He was pepper-sprayed and beaten numerous times before being overpowered, detained, and taken to Jumapo Police Station. Later, he was transported to the Regional MTTD at the Koforidua Police Headquarters.

The Akyem Tafo District Police Command, led by ASP Fred Kpetigo, went to Koforidua Regional Police Headquarters and met the suspect, who was handcuffed and had a swollen face, at the RMTTU charge office.

The suspect, who remained anonymous, identified himself as Nana Agyemang.

He was sent to the Akyem Tafo District Police Command, where he was treated and released from the New Tafo Akim Government Hospital.

According to DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, the suspect is in police custody cooperating with the investigation, while the partially damaged stolen car has been towed to Regional Police Headquarters.
