Don’t Drag My Office Into Partisan Politics – Amidu Warns Mahama

Published

on

Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu has caution former president John Dramani Mahama to quit dragging the Office of the Special Prosecutor into partisan politics.

He was reacting to Mahama’s promise that he’ll not interfere with his work if elected President.

In a statement, Amidu wrote, ““He [John Mahama] must know by now that under section 4 of Act 959, except as otherwise provided for in the 1992 Constitution, the Office is not subject to the direction or control of a person or an authority in the performance of the functions of the Office even when the Office acts upon the authority of the Attorney-General to initiate and conduct the prosecution of corruption and corruption-related offences.”

See full statement below:

STOP DRAGGING THE OFFICE OF THE SPECIAL PROSECUTOR INTO PARTISAN
POLITICS: BY MARTIN A. B.K. AMIDU, THE SPECIAL PROSECUTOR
I have read with dismay the deliberate efforts by certain Presidential candidates for the 2020
Elections to drag the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the person of the Special Prosecutor,
Martin Amidu, as he is referred to in their speeches and media publications, into their campaign
rhetoric to demonstrate their determination to prevent and fight corruption as a reason why the
electorate must consider them as the candidate of choice for the up-coming elections.
“I won’t sack Martin Amidu if I win – Mahama” was the banner headline on the Ghana Web
Politics of Tuesday, 20 th October 2020 with its source as Daily Mail. Then on the same Ghana
Web General News of Tuesday, 20 th October 2020 with the sources as Starr FM and Class FM, I
read that: “I will warn my appointees against messing with Amidu – Mahama” and “I’ll warn my
appointees against messing with Amidu, I won’ interfere with his work – Mahama”, respectively.
As the Special Prosecutor who personifies the Office of the Special Prosecutor, I find such
statements patronizing, and needless within the objects, mandate and functions granted to the
Office under the Office of the special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959). These pronouncements
constitute interferences with, and attempts to influence the independent mandate of this Office to
investigate, and prosecute certain electoral offences apportioned to this Office under the law
which constitute corruption and corruption-related offences as clearly stated in Section 79 of Act
959.
Any Ghanaian worthy of putting himself forward as Presidential candidate for the up-coming
elections should know the content of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959) by
now. He must know by now that under section 4 of Act 959, except as otherwise provided for in
the 1992 Constitution, the Office is not subject to the direction or control of a person or an
authority in the performance of the functions of the Office even when the Office acts upon the
authority of the Attorney- General to initiate and conduct the prosecution of corruption and
corruption-related offences. It is also clearly stated that the Board of the Office shall not interfere
in the day to-day functions of the Office. This independence of the Office in the performance of
the functions of the Office is reinforced when Act 959 gives the Special Prosecutor full authority
and control over the investigation, initiation and conduct of proceedings under subsection (1) of
section 3 which spells out the functions of the Office.
Every adult Ghanaian knows who sued the nominee for the Office of the Special Prosecutor in
January 2018 even before he could be considered for approval by Parliament. The record of
proceedings and the media published the names of the cohort of lawyers who supported and
argued the case against the Attorney-General and Martin Alamisi Amidu until Martin Alamisi
Amidu’s name was struck out from the suit. There is no reasonable Ghanaian who does not know
those who condemned the Supreme Court’s decision in the media and continue to do so. The
Supreme Court has settled the matter with its final and authoritative decision in favour of the

Attorney-General. Before the decision of the Supreme Court one could make statements of
speculation about what one would allow the Office to do or not to do. The Office of the Special
Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959) as interpreted by the Supreme Court is not negotiable and
nobody can mess with that Office unless the Special Prosecutor abdicates his independence and
surrenders the functions of his Office to politicians.
As the Special Prosecutor I do not need assurances from anybody of leaving me in Office when
she or he wins the elections. The Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (959) governs the
situation. In any case the position of Special Prosecutor is not one of servitude but of service. It
is, therefore, needless for anybody to assume airs about what she or he will do with the Office or
Martin Amidu when she or he wins the elections. The Office is an independent statutory anti-
corruption agency and must be respected as such notwithstanding who for the time being holds
the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
Crime is crime. There is no need trying to politicize the work of the Office and linking its fate
with election results. May be Ghanaians ought to revisit a few of the things I said on oath during
my vetting for approval as Special Prosecutor by Parliament on 13 th February 2018. The
following stands out and can either be read or listened to when one Google’s: “Thieves fear
investigators they cannot influence”. I told Parliament, inter alia, that:
“Thieves fear experienced, credible and tested investigators whom they cannot influence. That is
the way to reduce crime. When they know the investigator is very experienced, credible, and has
the capacity to find wrong, they will not do it. This country is not a milking cow. It is for the
people of this country, particularly, the downtrodden, the poor ones. I am saying that that is my
position, and it will be. I am saying that whether I am approved or not I will continue to fight for
the people of this country.
….If you go and look at the agreements I reviewed, they will tell you, I say it as it is. This is not
in the national interest and, therefore, don’t do it.”
have a Constitutional right as a citizen of Ghana to continue my crusade against corruption
whether as Special Prosecutor or a citizen of Ghana as I stated on oath to Parliament. I do not
need a public office to continue to fight corruption. I used to crusade against corruption more
effectively before accepting to be appointed as the Special Prosecutor. I do not need any
patronage and I do not think the Office of the Special Prosecutor as an independent statutory
anti-corruption agency needs one. My position at my vetting by Parliament is no different from
what the Secretary General Antonio Guterres is reported to have said to the United Nations
General Assembly in commemoration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations:
“Corruption is criminal, immoral and the ultimate betrayal of public trust.” I repeat: “This
country is not a milking cow. It is for the people of this country, particularly, the downtrodden,
the poor ones. I am saying that that is my position, and it will be” no matter who becomes the
President of Ghana. Ghana First!

NDC Issues Statement On Kasoa Murder; Calls On Akufo-Addo To Speed Up Probe Into Unresolved Crimes

Published

on

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has in a statement commiserated with family of the ten-year old boy who was killed by two teenagers at Kasoa for ‘money ritual purposes’.

The statement called on President Akufo-Addo to as a matter of urgency speed up investigations into unsolved crimes in the country since he took over the wheels of power.

Read full statement below:

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS ON THE MURDER OF YOUNG ISHMAEL MENSAH ABDALLAH AT KASOA.

It is with extreme shock and disbelief that the National Democratic Congress received news of the gruesome murder of a ten-year-old boy called Ishmael Mensah Abdallah at Kasoa in the Central Region by his own teenaged acquaintances for ritual purposes.

The Leadership, as well as the entire rank and file of the NDC, join the family and friends and, indeed, the entire nation, in mourning the loss of this young and promising boy much beloved by his family and community.

It is the expectation of the National Democratic Congress that the appropriate authorities will ensure that the bereaved family are comforted by the swiftness of the application of the law to punish the perpetrators and all who may be behind this dastardly murder.

The NDC has taken due notice of the fact that there appears to be a fashionable craze toward the acquisition of quick wealth by many of our countrymen and women and the youth in particular, without the attendant hard, morally sound and lawful means of obtaining same.

We deem this development as a dangerous trend that has to be condemned and discouraged by all and sundry.

It is a development which the NDC is unquestionably opposed to, or else we risk bequeathing to the youth, a practice and a lifestyle that cannot build this nation.

We further wish to draw the attention of the Akufo-Addo government to the plethora of crimes whose resolution has dragged on interminably, thus, encouraging the perpetuation of the culture of impunity.

We encourage the youth to look out for honest, hardworking, and accomplished persons as their role models.

Wealth which has been improperly obtained, should never be an attraction for the upcoming youth of this great nation.

In this regard, we call on the Akufo-Addo government to speed up investigations and crank the wheels of justice so that the country can rid itself of the odious reminder of this unfortunate event.

May the soul of young Ishmael Mensah Abdallah rest in peace.

World Homeopathy Day: Celebrating the Leading Fathers of Homeopathy in Ghana

Published

on

10th of April is celebrated as “World Homeopathy Day” to make the immense contribution of homeopathy to medicine, all around the world. This day is observed on the birth anniversary of the founder of homeopathy, Dr Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann who was a German born in Paris on April 10, 1755.

Dr Hahnemann, a distinguished scientist and scholar discovered the way to heal through the use of homeopathy—and his discovery, as well as methods, continue to serve humanity as a plausible complementary or alternative medicine.

As a complementary or alternative medicine, homeopathy is different from treatments that are part of conventional western medicine in many ways. A central principle of the “treatment” is that “like cures like” – that a substance that causes certain symptoms can also help to remove it.

Just like many other branches of medicine, homeopathy has faced criticism in the past and continues to face the same today, however, its usage across the world is growing with prominent figures such as Queen Elizabeth II and her successor-Prince Charles being users and benefactors of this form of alternative medicine.

In 2007, Prince Charles wrote to the then-health secretary of the UK-Alan Johnson complaining that people were “suffering unnecessarily” as a result of the minister’s “anti-homeopathy campaign”. In his letter, Charles stated, inter lia, that homeopathy “offers an holistic, patient-centred, low-risk, low-cost, low-tech approach” and that “for all these reasons it must surely make abundant sense to safeguard the HHs [homeopathic hospitals] in the interests of the nation’s health.”

In March 2020, it was reported that Queen Elizabeth, 94 years, continues to rely on homeopathy to keep her well during the coronavirus outbreak. The Queen’s mother, who lived to 101 was also said to be a fan of homeopathy.

If the royal family of Great Britain and over 100 million people in India solely depend on homeopathy for their medical care as well as over 100 million citizens of the European Union use homeopathic medicines, then surely its acceptance and growing popularity in Ghana was inevitable.

In celebrating homeopathy today, its journey and now prominence in Ghana is worthy of reminiscing. The early practitioners such as Dr Adu Boateng whose End Point Homeopathic Clinic is a front industry runner in Ghana faced several obstacles (from individual acceptance to regulatory issues) during the introduction of this form of alternative medicine to the mass market in Ghana over a decade ago.

“Of course, there were people practising homeopathy in Ghana before I entered into practice over 10 years ago with End Point Homeopathic Clinic. However, these pioneers where practising a bit of everything in the sector of alternative medicine. Most of them had herbal medicine as their main area but delved into homeopathy too,” Dr Adu Boateng in an interview stated.

He continued: “It was a relentless struggle those days and it seems because a sole homeopathic practice was not in existence, the necessary regulatory framework was not developed—so all these had to come into force gradually and instituted by the government for us to get to where we are today as a country that has somewhat widely accepted homeopathy.”

With 5 branches across Ghana, Dr Adu Boateng and his End Point Homeopathy Clinic have successfully trained several homeopaths who have also established their clinics in Ghana—furthering his ultimate desire to bring homeopathy to the front doors of millions of Ghanaians.

Commenting on the growth and acceptance of homeopathy and the future of alternative medicine in Ghana, Dr Adu Boateng stated that “it is refreshing to see more practitioners of homeopathy providing quality healthcare services in Ghana—but what is even more gratifying is the fact that treatments are working and more people are relying and trusting this form of alternative medicine.”

However, he cautioned the general public against patronizing the practices of non-quality and unqualified practitioners—saying, there are a few people who as would be expected of any industry are doing anything and calling it homeopathy.

“When it comes to a person’s health, it cannot be played with, therefore, Ghanaians should make sure that they are only using well established and trustworthy homeopathic clinics to ensure that they receive the deserving healthcare,” Dr Boateng said.

In celebrating this year’s “World Homeopathy Day,” End Point Homeopathy Clinic is offering free prostate screening for men—and free fertility testing for women at all its branches across Ghana for the month of April.
