Edward Abambire Bawa, a prominent figure in the Energy Sector in Ghanaian politics and public service, has been reassigned to GOIL (Ghana Oil Company Limited) as Group CEO, effective immediately, as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s broader strategy for the energy sector. This move underscores Bawa’s extensive experience and expertise in both the public and private sectors.

Edward Abambire Bawa hails from Bongo-Lungu in the Upper East Region of Ghana. His academic journey is marked by significant achievements. In 1986, he passed the Common Entrance Examination, followed by obtaining his Ordinary Level (O-Level) certificate in 1991 and his Advanced Level (A-Level) certificate in 1993. He earned a Bachelor of Education in Chemistry from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, in 2002, and later completed a Master of Business Administration in Business Finance from the University of Liverpool in 2007. Additionally, he holds a Certificate in Development Communications from 2012 and a Certificate in Risk Communications from 2014. Bawa also holds postgraduate certificates from prestigious institutions such as the Harvard School of Public Health, the University of Southern California, and Setym International.

Bawa’s political career has been equally distinguished. In 2016, he contested and won the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries for the Bongo Constituency. He went on to win the parliamentary seat in the 2016 Ghanaian general elections, securing 18,442 votes (47.9%) against his competitors. In 2020, he recontested and won the NDC parliamentary primaries again, with 590 votes against Dr. Rainer Akumperigya’s 291 votes. He subsequently won the parliamentary seat in the 2020 general elections with 26,268 votes (57.7%).

Despite his previous successes, Bawa faced a setback in the 2023 NDC primaries, where he was defeated by private legal practitioner Charles Bawadua on May 13, 2023. This loss marked the end of his tenure in parliament but opened new avenues for his expertise in the energy sector.

Bawa’s reassignment to GOIL as Group CEO is a strategic move by President Mahama to leverage his extensive experience in leadership, finance, and public service. GOIL, being a key player in Ghana’s energy sector, stands to benefit from Bawa’s vision and management skills as the country continues to navigate the complexities of energy production, distribution, and sustainability. This appointment is expected to bring fresh perspectives and innovative strategies to GOIL, aligning with the broader goals of the Mahama administration to enhance the energy sector’s efficiency and reliability.
