ASEPA Boss Mensah Thompson Granted GHC50,000 Bail

The executive director of the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mensah Thompson, has been admitted to bail in the sum of GHC 50,000.00 by a district court in Accra presided over by Magistrate Oheneba Kufuor.

Thompson has been charged by the sate with two counts of publication of false news and conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.

Thompson on 7 January 2022, on his Facebook wall, alleged that the presidential aircraft of the Ghana Air Force was used by relatives of the president for a shopping trip to the United Kingdom between 20 and 30 December 2021.

In court today 10 February 2022, when Thompson was arraigned, he pleaded not guilty to the two charges levelled against him.

His lawyer, Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, quickly applied for bail for his client, assuring the court that his client will make himself available to stand trial at material times when he is called upon to do same.

Police Prosecutor, Chief Inspector, Teye Okuffo, opposed the bail application on the grounds that the accused person failed to honour an invitation of the police without giving any tangible reason.

He later showed up at the police station when he got wind of the fact that a warrant had been issued for his arrest, the police prosecutor said in open court.

Chief Inspector Teye Okuffo, to this end indicated in court that the accused person is likely not to avail himself to stand trial should he be granted bail.

Magistrate Oheneba Kufuor in his ruling following the arguments of the parties, decided to admit the accused person to bail in the sum of GHC50,000

He further ordered that the accused person must report to the police twice every week until the final determination of the case.

“Sitting is adjourned to 15 March 2022 for further hearing,” Magistrate  Kufuor ruled.
