Martin Amidu, a former Special Prosecutor, believes the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) attitude toward the rejection of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) is arrogant.

Mr. Amidu claims in his latest article that Ghanaians have rejected the E-levy since it was announced in the 2022 budget and debated in Parliament.

“The Nana Akufo-Addo government has refused to learn any lessons from its ineffective escalatory conflict strategies and tactics, as well as the counter moves by the Minority in Parliament, which inevitably resulted in the brawl in Parliament at dawn on December 21, 2021, in its usual arrogance, impunity, and abuse of power.”

“When the First Deputy Speaker, Mr. Joe Osei-Owusu, who was presiding over the plenary attempted to employ a ruse to vote on whether the Electronic Transfer Levy Bill should be considered for passage by the House under a certificate of urgency,” he revealed.

The study, analytical results, and findings published on open-source all point to the fact that the country’s economic situation contributes to opposition to the E-adoption, levy’s according to the former Attorney General.

“Despite conclusive research and analysis results and findings available on open-source pointing incontestably to the fact that the majority of Ghanaians do not, on a non-partisan basis, agree with the Government’s reasons for imposing the draconian levy, the Government has demonstrated a determination throughout this period to impose the draconian 1.75 percent Electronic Transfer Levy on Ghanaians who use electronic transfers, the Government has demonstrated a determination to impose the draconian levy
