Aowin Traditional Council Banishes NDC MP From Setting Foot On Their Land After Allegedly Disrespecting Omanhene

The Aowin Traditional Council has also accused Larbi of involvement in illegal mining activities within the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve, a charge the MP has vehemently denied. Larbi maintains that he has actively worked to combat illegal mining in the area and has taken steps to address the issue. However, the council remains unconvinced, citing his alleged misuse of political power to undermine traditional authority.

In an unprecedented move, the Aowin Traditional Council has performed traditional rituals to banish Oscar Ofori Larbi, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Aowin constituency, from setting foot on any land within the Aowin Traditional Area. This drastic action follows accusations that the MP has repeatedly disrespected the traditional authority by spreading falsehoods about the paramount chief and other divisional chiefs in the area.

The ritual, led by Nana Opong Payin III, Chief of Omanpe, involved the slaughtering of a sheep and the pouring of libation. The council invoked the gods of the Aowin land to deal with Larbi should he defy the ban. While the council acknowledged that Larbi was duly elected by his constituents, they emphasized that his persistent disrespect for traditional authority left them with no choice but to take this severe step.

Nana Payin II, Tufuhene of Enchi, has been particularly vocal in his criticism of the MP. He accused Larbi of exploiting his political position to disregard the cultural and traditional norms of the Aowin people. According to Nana Payin II, the MP has repeatedly ignored formal invitations from the traditional council and has used national media platforms to express insubordination toward the Aowin Omanhene and other chiefs. Additionally, the MP is alleged to have funded a documentary aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the revered chiefs.

The traditional council has made it clear that their grievances are solely with Larbi and not with his political party or the government. They have stated that any government-led development projects in the area should be channeled through the Regional Minister or the yet-to-be-appointed Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

This conflict highlights the delicate balance between modern political authority and traditional governance in Ghana. As the situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the need for mutual respect and collaboration between elected officials and traditional leaders to ensure the well-being and progress of local communities.
