Akufo-Addo Shouldn’t Apologize for Going to IMF – Charles Bissue

There is nothing to apologize for going to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Akufo-Addo administration although the government had said earlier that it was not going to the Fund, a former Western Region Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Charles Bissue, has said.

He explained that the country is faced with two major global crises, the Covid-19 and Russia-Ukraine war, which have impacted negatively on economies around the world.

Charles Bissue indicated that unlike the NPP, the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has never experienced a global pandemic when in government therefore, they do not know what it takes to manage such situations.

His comments come after NDC officials have asked the government to apologise for mismanaging the economy, for which they have gone to the IMF for support.

For instance, a private legal practitioner and a member of the NDC Gordon Edudzi Tameklo said the government was expected to apologise for the poor performance in managing the economy.

Regrettably, he said, the government was rather engaged in grandstanding.

He said on the New Day show with Johnnie Hughes on TV3, Monday July 4 “I was expecting the director of the NPP to look the people of Ghana in their faces and with humility apologise for the pervasive deception, the grandstanding, the recklessness , the pervasive corruption that have become the name of the Akufo-Addo /Bawumia/Ken Ofori-Atta administration.

“Regrettably, they have decided , instead of apologizing for their abysmal performance as a government that today has brought all of us on our knees, they have rather decided to engage grandstanding and that is the reason why we are where we are today.”

Asked whether the President should be apologizing to Ghanaians because he promised not to take the country to IMF but he has,, while also speaking on the New Day show with Johnnie Hughes on Thursday July 14, Mr Charles Bissue said “No, I don’t think so.”

He further explained “The scenarios are different. In Kuffuor’s time, there was the credit crunch which affected the whole world, NDC have never experienced that before. It got to a point that there was an epidemic which was a small locality, 205 people died. So if you are going back to say that at that time there was pandemic, what would have happened couldn’t have been managed well.

“We have managed Covid well, we have the Ukraine and the Russia war. People are saying we shouldn’t talk about it, it is a fact.”
