Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has explained that the party’s pledge to absorb 50% of the school fees of all tertiary students will only be a one off thing, thus only 2020/2021 academic year.

Speaking on Class FM, the former president noted that tertiary students also need to benefit from the Covid relief, stressing that some parents may have hard time paying school fees due to the dire consequences of the novel coronavirus.

He rubbished claims by some critics that the NDC will be unable to fund and sustain the initiative, insisting it is only a one off thing for the year 2020/21 to ease tertiary students of the negative economic impact brought about by the Covid-19.

Running mate of the NDC, Prof Naana Agyemang during the party’s manifesto launch said, “we will absorb 50 percent of fees for tertiary students…. adding that free laptops will also be given out to students; all of this is to reduce the burden imposed on parents following the Coronavirus pandemic.”
