Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been summoned by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to assist in an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption-related activities involving the President and his administration. The invitation, issued on February 21, 2025, and signed by the Bono Regional Commander, Mr. Kwaku Afari, directs Abronye to report to the NIB office in Kwawukudi.

The summons has sparked controversy, with critics accusing the NIB of employing intimidation tactics against the NPP chairman. Analysts and political commentators have expressed concerns over the tone and timing of the invitation, suggesting it could be perceived as politically motivated. Youth activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has been particularly vocal, condemning the language of the letter and implying that the NIB appears to have a personal issue with Abronye.

Barker-Vormawor also took the opportunity to caution the Mahama-led government, urging them to exercise restraint in their actions. He warned that any overreach or perceived misuse of state institutions could erode the social capital and public trust the government has built since assuming office. His remarks underscore the delicate balance between law enforcement and political accountability, especially in a highly polarized environment.

The development has further intensified the political climate in Ghana, with opposition figures and civil society groups closely monitoring the situation. While the NIB maintains that the invitation is part of a legitimate investigation, the controversy surrounding it highlights the challenges of addressing corruption allegations without appearing to target political opponents. As the situation unfolds, many are calling for transparency and due process to ensure that the investigation is conducted fairly and without bias.
