24-Hour Economy Is Not Compulsory – John Mahama Clarifies

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated that his flagship economic proposal, the “24-Hour Economy” policy, is entirely voluntary and not mandatory.
During an interview with GBC Sunrise FM in Koforidua, which was later aired on Woezor TV, Mr. Mahama explained how the policy would function and benefit those willing to participate. The interview formed part of his recent campaign tour of Ghana’s Eastern Region.
Addressing a question on how the policy would impact the average resident in places like Koforidua and Akwatia, Mr. Mahama said:
“The 24-hour economy is voluntary; it is not going to be by force. When the NDC assumes office, we will release the policy document for public review so everyone can determine if their enterprises align with it.
“We will establish a 24-hour economy secretariat, where interested individuals or businesses can engage with the initiative. Participants will be required to submit a form, after which the secretariat will assess their suitability through an inspection. If deemed eligible, the government will provide necessary support to enable their growth and help them employ more people.”
The former president’s remarks aim to clarify the policy’s scope and reassure the public of its non-compulsory nature.

The updated explanation of the “24-Hour Economy” policy has sparked diverse reactions online, with both supporters and critics weighing in.
Koku Anyidohu, a former deputy general secretary of the NDC, shared his thoughts on the issue via his X account (formerly Twitter) on Friday, November 29, 2024.
“We thank God ooooo!!!! Dead goat, John Mahama finally succumbs to the pressure of Bawumia’s superior visionary policies, and admits that 24hr economy is not a policy that can be enforced.
“He (John Mahama) says that it is ‘voluntary’ and not ‘compulsory’. Damn!!!! God save us from the return of John Mahama without any decisive and comprehensive policy. Amen,” Mr. Anyidohu wrote.
While the policy remains a key talking point in Mr. Mahama’s campaign, the debate surrounding its feasibility and implementation continues to divide public opinion. The NDC’s 24-hour economy proposal promises to provide additional employment opportunities and enhance economic activity for willing participants, but it will need to address skepticism from detractors and win broader public trust ahead of the elections.
